JOB SUMMARY
The Quality Assurance Technician is responsible for inspecting incoming materials, electronic components, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), subassemblies, and associated documentation to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, purchase orders, and applicable quality standards. This position supports manufacturing operations by preventing nonconforming material from entering production and ensuring traceability and documentation requirements are maintained.
The ideal candidate has experience in electronics manufacturing quality inspection, strong attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical documentation, IPC standards, and quality requirements in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform receiving inspection of incoming materials, parts, assemblies and products.
- Verify compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, purchase orders, and quality requirements.
- Visual/magnification aided inspection for accurate and consistent component placement and solder joint quality.
- Identify PCA defects such as shorts, excess and missing solder, cracks, solder bridges, and missing components.
- Provide PCB cross-section processing and recording for engineering evaluation
- Inspection and review of test data sheets.
- Work with production team and other departments to correct any issues.
- Ensure that all products meet safety and quality regulations.
- Make recommendations for process improvements.
- Review supplier documentation including Certificates of Conformance (CoC), material certifications, test reports, inspection reports, and traceability documentation.
- Conduct dimensional, visual, and mechanical inspections using standard inspection tools and equipment.
- Inspect electronic assemblies and PCBs in accordance with IPC standards
- Identify and document nonconforming materials and initiate NCRs (Nonconformance Reports).
- Segregate rejected or suspect material according to company procedures.
- Communicate inspection findings with Quality, Engineering, Purchasing, and Manufacturing teams.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation in ERP system.
- Ensure compliance with ESD, FOD, safety, and handling requirements.
- Support internal audits, customer audits, and supplier quality activities, as needed.
- Maintain organized receiving and inspection work areas.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
Required job skills, experience and education include:
- High school diploma or GED required
- 5+ years of quality inspection experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proven experience with PCB cross-section processing and recording
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and BOMs
- Highly skilled in inspecting PCBs, electronic assemblies, connectors, cable assemblies, and solder workmanship
- Knowledge of thru-hole and SMT parts with respect to polarity and component identification
- Experience using calipers, micrometers, and optical comparators
- Strong understanding of inspection methods and quality documentation
- Critical traits include strong observation skills, consistency, patience, process discipline, and ability to follow procedures exactly
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP systems such as Epicor
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and strong problem-solving skills
Preferred job skills, experience and education include:
- Experience in electronics manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with quality standards such as IPC-A-610, IPC-A-600, J-STD-001
- IPC certification
- Experience with NCR/MRB processes
- Experience with ESD-sensitive electronic components and assemblies
- ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) certification
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Climate-controlled electronics manufacturing environment
- Exposure to soldering fumes, ESD-controlled areas, and precision manufacturing equipment
- Fast-paced production environment with shifting priorities and schedule-driven deadlines
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Ability to work under microscope magnification for prolonged periods
- Frequent use of hands for fine motor soldering and assembly tasks
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
