Job Summary:
The Well Specialist provides quality care and education for The Well, Church Health's Prevention and Wellness Education program, serving children from The YMCA, the Church Health Clinic, and Church Health Staff families. This position also provides guidance to Well Staff regarding daily tasks, policies and procedures, training to volunteers about The Well, and leads the program in the Manager's or Supervisor's absence. Specialists rotate serving as Leader on Duty throughout the week and participate in clinic consults. Specialists model best practices in direct service and work closely with leadership regarding program planning and curriculum implementation. Activities should address, but are not limited to, the six root causes in the program: Nutrition, Physical Activity, Body Image, Self-Esteem, Safety Education, and Violence Prevention.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Manager & Supervisor frequently as they guide Well Staff regarding high quality care and research-based prevention and wellness education. This is done through the lens of whole person health in body, mind, and spirit and includes our cornerstone child focused health coaching program, Plan To Get Healthy; All work is done within the philosophy that The Well is child centered, family focused, and ministry minded with a promise to families to keep children safe, learning, and happy.
- Teach children (ages 6 weeks – 12 years) in individual exploration and group teaching activities in The Well's facilities and other environments. This includes teaching and implementing curriculum and keeping children safe, learning, and happy.
- Plan appropriate programming, lessons and activities that are cornerstones of The Well's prevention and wellness education programming; Researching information and reviewing materials available for educating children in the areas of body, mind and spirit; Finding appropriate materials for use in The Well program based on the needs of our clients and currents trends in educational research. Also, using information gathered to organize special events in The Well work area.
- Serve as a resource for consults in the Church Health Clinic for pediatric patients and their families.
- Consult with The Well's staff regarding lesson plans, schedules, and promotional materials. Provide them with guidance and teaching tips; Reviewing and revising their work in cooperation with the Supervisor if needed; Collaborating with the Manager and Supervisor to update all schedules to make sure that there is appropriate coverage in the work area.
- Organize paperwork and data on the children in The Well's programs. This must be done to make staff aware of all physical/medical issues children may have, as well as any medications they may take or any allergies they may have; Follow-up calls must be made to ensure that children will be safe and healthy in this environment. Examples: tracking pediatric referrals, Plan to Get Healthy Goals, intake information from parents and children, and appropriate coding of identification cards for triage purposes.
- Communicate with community agencies, volunteers, schools, special interest groups and others with information about Church Health and The Well. Most communication is done through written words, which includes creating calendars, updating bulletins, and preparing flyers to promote activities. Examples: speaking to groups, giving tours, sharing teaching curriculum or schedules when appropriate, providing support with field trip planning and implementation, representing our work area at outreach events, and calling families regarding pediatric referrals.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge about child development is important to understand the stages and appropriate activities to offer.
- Knowledge of different approaches and methods to teaching and learning.
- Strong desire to work with children of all ages, backgrounds, races, religions, and abilities.
- Reading, writing, grammar, and math skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both oral/written with a broad base of stakeholders.
- Ability to coach and provide instruction to others.
- Good interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Moderate level of desktop computer skills to include the O365 productivity software suite.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree: A four-year undergraduate degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, Family Studies, Health Studies, Exercise & Movement Science, or a relevant field is required.
- 1-3 years of experience working with children.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Work is frequently active in nature and requires the ability to move around a large workspace on multiple floors. Requires some amount of computer work and hand dexterity and the ability to lift up to 10 lbs. on a regular basis.
