Staff Software Engineer, Cash App Banking

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Cash App Banking based in Canada.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the technical strategy for banking-related engineering initiatives, partnering closely with product managers, designers, engineers, and business stakeholders.
  • Drive cross-functional architectural decisions and infrastructure improvements that increase system reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust backend systems that support critical financial products and customer experiences.
  • Contribute directly to technical designs and production code while maintaining a strong understanding of the systems powering banking solutions.
  • Influence engineering leaders and teams by promoting effective, consistent, and scalable technical approaches.
  • Establish and uphold high engineering standards through thoughtful design reviews, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, helping them expand their technical expertise and grow their impact across teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, architecture, and platform capabilities.
  • Apply AI-driven approaches to daily engineering workflows and encourage broader adoption of modern development practices.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to deliver secure, reliable, and innovative financial technology solutions at scale.
Requirements
  • 12+ years of experience in software development or equivalent engineering experience.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale technical projects, including planning, execution, delivery, and maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Strong ability to identify, align, and implement optimal technical solutions within complex systems involving multiple teams and dependencies.
  • Deep expertise in designing and building scalable software solutions for complex engineering challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and helping technical teams grow in capability and impact.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions across engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with backend technologies and distributed systems, including Java, Kotlin, AWS, HTTP, JSON, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers.
  • Familiarity with databases and infrastructure technologies such as MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Aurora, Kafka, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with engineering tools and frameworks such as JUnit, Gradle, Buildkite, DataDog, and related development platforms.
  • Strong interest in applying AI tools and modern engineering practices to improve productivity and innovation.
