Job Description
The Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator is a critical role within the Operations/Construction department, responsible for accurately locating and tracking the drill head during HDD operations. This position requires a dedicated individual who can work closely with the drilling team to ensure safe and efficient job site practices while guiding the drill operator to follow the designed path and avoid underground utilities and obstacles. Opportunities for advancement and paid training to become a drill operator are available for committed team members.
Responsibilities
• Use locating equipment to track the drill head and provide accurate information on its location and trajectory.
• Identify and mark underground utilities using appropriate detection tools before drilling begins.
• Communicate continuously with the drill operator, providing real-time guidance to ensure the drill head stays on the designed bore path.
• Maintain accurate records of the bore path, drill logs, and other relevant documentation.
• Ensure that drilling operations are conducted safely and in accordance with company policies and industry standards.
• Perform basic maintenance on locating equipment and troubleshoot issues when necessary.
• Assist the team in resolving issues related to underground conditions, obstacles, or other unexpected challenges encountered during the drilling process.
Requirements
• Minimum 2-3 years of experience in Horizontal Directional Drilling, with at least 1 year as a Locator.
• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Proficiency in using locating equipment such as DCI Falcon, Subsite, or similar systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and project drawings.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in HDD.
Nice-to-haves
• Trade school or technical certifications in HDD operations or construction.
• Familiarity with trenchless technology and utility installation methods.
• CDL (Commercial Driver's License) or ability to obtain one in the future.
