The Staff Software Engineer is responsible for providing technical direction, building reliable software systems, and enabling engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions at scale.
- Provide technical leadership across multiple teams and initiatives, ensuring solutions align with business objectives and long-term technical strategy.
- Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and architecture using technologies such as Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and related frameworks.
- Contribute directly to software development while influencing architectural decisions, engineering standards, and platform improvements.
- Balance immediate delivery needs with long-term scalability, maintainability, security, and system health.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical and operational risks across products and engineering systems.
- Create clarity around complex technical decisions, trade-offs, and implementation approaches in ambiguous situations.
- Establish and promote best practices for code quality, security, privacy, observability, testing, and documentation.
- Mentor engineers, provide thoughtful technical guidance, and help teams improve their engineering practices.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineering leaders to solve complex cross-functional challenges.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, tools, and approaches that improve developer productivity and product outcomes.
- Support a collaborative and inclusive engineering culture where teams can perform effectively and continue growing.
The ideal candidate is an experienced software engineer with strong technical judgment, backend expertise, and the ability to influence engineering direction across teams. They should be comfortable solving complex problems independently while supporting and mentoring others.
- Extensive professional experience building and leading software systems, typically 15+ years or equivalent demonstrated impact.
- Advanced proficiency in Ruby on Rails and backend system design.
- Strong understanding of full-stack architecture, monolithic application patterns, and scalable software systems.
- Experience designing, developing, and operating production systems using PostgreSQL and REST APIs.
- Proficiency with React and/or React Native.
- Experience working with cloud-hosted infrastructure, including AWS environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex, ambiguous technical challenges.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical decisions across teams.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a remote-first environment.
- Permanent residence and work authorization in the United States.
- Experience with AWS services, observability platforms, infrastructure as code, feature flagging systems, or AI/LLM-powered tools is a plus.
- Competitive salary range of $220,000 - $240,000 per year based on experience.
