Sr. Database Engineer, Postgre SQL/AWS Aurora

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Database Engineer, Postgre SQL/AWS Aurora based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of critical database infrastructure supporting a high-volume operational platform.
The successful candidate will serve as a technical expert responsible for scaling, optimizing, and securing complex PostgreSQL environments.
You will work on database architecture, performance tuning, production reliability, and operational improvements that directly impact business-critical workflows.
This position combines deep technical expertise with cross-functional collaboration across engineering, infrastructure, and data teams.
You will contribute to improving data accessibility, application performance, and system stability in a fast-moving technology environment.

Accountabilities:

The Sr. Database Engineer will be responsible for managing and enhancing enterprise database systems, ensuring performance, reliability, and operational excellence across production environments. The role requires close collaboration with technical teams to optimize data workflows, improve database safety, and support application development.

  • Serve as a PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora subject-matter expert, providing guidance on database architecture, performance, and best practices.
  • Manage and optimize large relational databases with complex schemas, high-volume operational data, and extensive historical records.
  • Review database changes, migrations, and schema updates to ensure performance, security, scalability, and operational safety.
  • Investigate and resolve production database issues, including slow queries, blocking transactions, lock contention, replication challenges, and performance regressions.
  • Improve SQL performance through query optimization, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and database tuning.
  • Automate recurring database maintenance activities, monitoring processes, cleanup routines, and operational workflows.
  • Support backup, restore, staging, release, and database refresh processes in partnership with infrastructure teams.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, infrastructure specialists, and data teams to improve application performance and data reliability.
  • Maintain secure database access patterns for developers, reporting users, analytics tools, and sensitive data environments.
  • Support business data integrations involving billing, payments, financial workflows, and enterprise systems when needed.
  • Document technical findings, recommendations, database processes, and improvement opportunities.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate brings strong production database engineering experience, advanced PostgreSQL expertise, and the ability to solve complex performance and reliability challenges in a collaborative environment.

  • 5+ years of experience working with production relational databases, with 8+ years preferred.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including AWS Aurora PostgreSQL environments.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge, including joins, CTEs, query execution plans, indexes, constraints, triggers, transactions, and locking behavior.
  • Experience supporting large-scale databases with complex schemas, high data volumes, and real-world production workloads.
  • Ability to diagnose database performance issues by analyzing query costs, locking behavior, indexing gaps, and application usage patterns.
  • Strong understanding of database migrations, schema design, access controls, production safety, and operational risk management.
  • Experience partnering with application engineers on database-backed application design and optimization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings and recommendations clearly.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, software engineering, or a related field preferred; advanced degree is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Linux, Bash scripting, automation tools, cron jobs, and database maintenance workflows is highly valued.
  • Experience with Java applications, MyBatis, Spring, reporting platforms, BI tools, PostGIS, or geospatial queries is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AWS monitoring and database observability tools such as CloudWatch, RDS Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, or pgAdmin is beneficial.
  • Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools and a willingness to incorporate AI into daily development workflows is preferred.
  • Exposure to ERP integrations, accounting systems, billing processes, payments, or financial data workflows is a plus.
