JOB PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY:

The Working Supervisor – CNC Machining (2nd Shift) is responsible for operating CNC production equipment while also providing direct leadership and supervision during off-shift hours. This hands-on role ensures that manufactured parts meet quality and print specifications, supports safe and efficient production, and fosters a collaborative team environment through coaching, mentoring, and real-time problem-solving.

In addition to individual machining duties, the Working Supervisor is accountable for overseeing shift activities, ensuring adherence to production schedules, coordinating with other departments, and maintaining productivity and quality standards throughout the shift

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate CNC machines efficiently, including setting up tooling, checking inserts, making offsets, and deburring finished parts.
  • Manufacture components accurately according to engineering prints and specifications.
  • Conduct quality assurance inspections to ensure parts meet required standards.
  • Accurately document quality data and production metrics for reporting and continuous improvement.
  • Support preventive maintenance efforts by performing routine checks on CNC machines and promptly informing maintenance staff of any potential issues or abnormalities to help minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with company policies.
  • Review production schedules, prioritize tasks, and prepare equipment and materials for daily operations.
  • Conduct light corrective maintenance on machinery to address minor issues promptly.
  • Safely handle materials and components throughout the production process.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, including the development and implementation of new fixturing and tooling solutions.
  • Independently set up and operate CNC lathes and mills across all machining cells with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Continuously seek and apply process improvements to enhance productivity, quality, and machine utilization.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to less experienced machinists; assist with problem-solving and skills development.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of various cutting tools and inserts, including appropriate selection and application.
  • Collaborate in the development of new machining processes, tooling, and fixturing to support production needs.
  • Flexibly adjust work priorities and assist across shifts as needed to meet operational demands.
  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to operators and CNC machinists on assigned shift.
  • Assign tasks and monitor progress to ensure adherence to production targets and quality expectations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving shift-level issues related to equipment, materials, or personnel.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide technical support to less experienced team members, fostering skill development and accountability.
  • Enforce safety, quality, and operational policies and procedures; take corrective action as needed to ensure compliance.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-shift supervisors, planning, and engineering teams to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Escalate critical issues to appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner.

COMPETENCIES:

  • CNC Programming Proficiency
    Demonstrates a solid understanding of both Mazatrol and G-code programming languages, with the ability to interpret, edit, and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Blueprint Reading & Interpretation
    Accurately reads and interprets engineering drawings, part specifications, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Precision Measurement & Gauging
    Effectively uses standard inspection tools such as micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, and height stands to verify part conformity.
  • Quality & Compliance Awareness
    Maintains a working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) principles and ISO quality system requirements, supporting consistent adherence to standards.

    Manages multiple priorities efficiently in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining attention to detail and quality.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Experienced in safely handling and loading parts exceeding 500 pounds using overhead cranes or hoists.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds as part of regular job duties.
  • Able to perform repetitive tasks with attention to detail and consistency.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with safety standards.
  • May occasionally require extended hours or weekend availability during peak production periods or in response to urgent needs.

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience operating and setting up CNC lathes and mills, including both horizontal and vertical machining centers (preferred).
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English.
  • Skilled in documenting production data and quality metrics accurately and consistently, using appropriate reporting tools or systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a leadership or lead machinist role, preferably on 2nd or 3rd shift.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, lead, and motivate team members in a manufacturing environment.
  • Comfortable working independently and making decisions during off-hours without immediate managerial oversight.
