About the Role:
The Peer Recovery Coach plays a vital role in supporting individuals on their journey to recovery from substance use and behavioral health challenges. This position focuses on providing empathetic, non-clinical support by sharing lived experiences and fostering hope, empowerment, and resilience. The coach collaborates closely with clients to develop personalized recovery plans, connect them with community resources, and navigate treatment options. By building trusting relationships, the Peer Recovery Coach helps clients overcome barriers and maintain long-term recovery goals. Ultimately, this role contributes to improving clients' overall well-being and quality of life through sustained peer support and advocacy.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Personal experience with recovery from substance use or behavioral health challenges, with a minimum of two years in sustained recovery.
- Certification as a Peer Recovery Coach or equivalent credential recognized by a state or national body.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and motivate diverse populations.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in all client interactions.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in behavioral health or related fields is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within community-based recovery programs or behavioral health organizations.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national resources related to addiction recovery and mental health services.
- Training in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention techniques.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and case management software.
- Bilingual abilities or experience working with culturally diverse populations.
Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one peer support to individuals in recovery, utilizing lived experience to build rapport and trust.
- Assist clients in identifying personal recovery goals and developing actionable plans to achieve them.
- Connect clients with community resources, treatment programs, and support groups to enhance their recovery journey.
- Advocate for clients’ needs within healthcare, social service, and legal systems to ensure comprehensive support.
- Facilitate group recovery meetings and educational workshops to promote peer engagement and skill-building.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of client interactions and progress in accordance with organizational policies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including counselors, social workers, and healthcare providers to coordinate care.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with best practices in peer recovery support.

The Peer Recovery Coach utilizes strong communication and active listening skills daily to build meaningful connections with clients, fostering trust and openness. Problem-solving and advocacy skills are essential for helping clients navigate complex systems and access necessary resources. Empathy and resilience enable the coach to support clients through setbacks and challenges while maintaining motivation. Organizational skills are important for managing caseloads, documenting progress, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
