The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) invites applications for a continuing, non-tenure track position with a rank of Assistant Teaching Professor/Faculty Advisor Instructor. This position will teach two 3-4 credit courses in the CLAS (per semester), and a 1-credit academic advising course. Faculty Advisors serve as the primary academic advisor for a group of incoming Exploratory Arts or Sciences students until they declare a major. The Assistant Teaching Professor/Faculty Advisor will report jointly to the academic department chair and the Director of Academic Advising in the Office for Undergraduate Students (OUS). The CLAS is especially interested in candidates who have a record of success advising and mentoring individuals from groups underrepresented in higher education. Applicants with teaching experience for courses offered by the following departments will be given priority – Classics, Communication, Computing Sciences, English, Geography & the Environment, Psychological & Brain Sciences, Sociology, and Spanish.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach two 3-4 credit courses per semester in the CLAS, especially those for first-year students, and a 1-credit advising course each year (typically in the fall semester).
  • Communicate with incoming first-year students during the summer to answer questions and review their schedules, assist with registration, attend a pre-semester faculty advisor workshop, and participate in New Student Orientation.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for incoming Exploratory Arts or Sciences students to provide guidance in satisfying the Core curriculum, exploring possible educational directions, and utilizing available resources until they declare a major.
  • Understand and effectively respond to academic and developmental needs of students by providing the appropriate support and/or referrals.
  • Convey to students the value of a liberal arts education and the transferable skills gained in such a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Monitor advisees’ academic progress and maintain accurate student files.
  • Participate in regular professional development faculty advisor workshops.
  • Collaborate, participate, and assist in developing innovative approaches to academic advising in response to student input and national trends.
  • Represent the Office for Undergraduate Students at various campus events sponsored by the CLAS and the University.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree.
  • Evidence of excellent teaching.
  • Experience in undergraduate student academic advising with an understanding of the academic, personal, and professional needs of undergraduate students.
  • Sincere commitment to developing the academic, professional, and personal well-being of students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills required to interact with students, faculty, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a service environment with frequent interruptions. Skills in setting priorities based on the importance of job responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in an Arts & Sciences discipline.
  • Knowledge of the academic policies and procedures of the University and the College, as well as an understanding of the effective resources and tools for academic success.
