Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Software Engineer - Edge Computing based in United States.
This is a highly technical, hands-on R&D role focused on building foundational software for next-generation connected-home experiences.
You will architect and develop an edge computing runtime and integration platform that brings together data and capabilities from connected devices.
The role combines software systems engineering, IoT, spatial intelligence, distributed computing, and emerging intelligent-agent technologies.
You will turn complex concepts into prototypes and production-quality systems while evaluating technologies for scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
Working across software, embedded, mobile, and IoT disciplines, you will influence architecture and technical direction from the ground up.
The environment encourages experimentation, rapid learning, thoughtful technical debate, and the ability to adapt as new information emerges.
This is an opportunity to take significant technical ownership and create foundational platforms with broad impact across connected-device ecosystems.
- Architect, design, and develop core components of next-generation edge computing, integration, and spatial intelligence platforms.
- Build an edge runtime and integration platform capable of combining data and capabilities from connected devices and making them accessible to applications, workloads, and intelligent agents.
- Develop software models, knowledge structures, and representations that make device and home information usable across edge applications, mobile experiences, and intelligent systems.
- Take complex technical challenges from initial concept through rapid prototyping, experimentation, implementation, and production-quality delivery, enabling the team to test assumptions and iterate quickly.
- Evaluate technologies, frameworks, and architectural approaches against requirements for scalability, reliability, performance, portability, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Provide technical leadership through architecture guidance, design reviews, code reviews, technical decision-making, and the establishment of strong software engineering practices.
- Collaborate closely with engineers across software, IoT systems, mobile applications, embedded firmware, and other technical disciplines to deliver integrated platform capabilities.
- Contribute to R&D planning by identifying opportunities, developing technical concepts, communicating recommendations, and helping determine which ideas should progress into new initiatives.
- Mentor engineers and foster a collaborative engineering culture centered on experimentation, continuous learning, technical excellence, and high-quality execution.
- Apply lessons learned from previous architectural and technical approaches to continuously improve future system designs and engineering decisions.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience working in technology environments, including substantial hands-on software development experience with compiled programming languages such as Rust, C, C++, or Go.
- Strong software systems engineering background focused on foundational technologies, with experience in areas such as databases, operating systems, compilers, networking, cybersecurity, virtualization, runtimes, or similar infrastructure.
- Professional experience in an R&D, advanced development, prototyping, or similarly exploratory technical environment where requirements and technical direction may evolve rapidly.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain architectural decisions, technical requirements, tradeoffs, recommendations, and complex engineering concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience taking software concepts from early prototypes through product-ready implementations and end-to-end platform development.
- Experience with Rust or demonstrated interest and ability to become highly proficient in Rust.
- Experience designing or developing foundational software systems, including databases, operating systems, compilers, runtimes, network stacks, protocols, or comparable infrastructure.
- Networking and network protocol development experience, ideally combined with knowledge of secure systems or cybersecurity-focused development.
- Experience with edge computing, distributed systems, or resource-constrained computing environments.
- Experience with knowledge graphs, ontologies, semantic technologies, or other approaches for representing relationships between systems and data is valuable.
- Experience developing or integrating intelligent agents, agent-based systems, or emerging intelligent software technologies is preferred.
- Experience with IoT technologies and connected-device ecosystems, including familiarity with the challenges of integrating heterogeneous devices and data sources.
- Experience with embedded Linux, including technologies such as Yocto, or experience working with embedded real-time operating systems.
- Experience with asynchronous programming and modern approaches to concurrent software development.
- Experience with containers, WebAssembly, virtualization, or other technologies supporting application portability and deployment across environments.
- Strong understanding of software quality practices, including testing, version control, continuous integration, and maintainable engineering processes.
- Experience with at least one major cloud platform; Azure experience is particularly relevant.
- Demonstrated ability to learn from previous technical and architectural decisions and apply those lessons to future system design.
- Comfortable moving between exploratory R&D work and execution, adapting quickly as new information emerges and challenging established processes when doing so can improve outcomes.
- Strong self-direction combined with active participation in team planning, technical discussions, design reviews, and collaborative decision-making.
Benefits:
- Opportunity to build foundational technology supporting the next generation of connected-home experiences.
- Work on technically challenging problems spanning edge computing, IoT, software systems, spatial intelligence, distributed technologies, and intelligent-agent systems.
- Join a high-impact R&D environment where you can directly influence architecture, technical strategy, and engineering direction.
- Opportunity to take ideas from early-stage exploration and prototypes through working, production-quality systems.
- Significant technical ownership and the ability to shape platforms that can support a broad range of connected-device products and experiences.
- Collaboration with experienced engineers across software, IoT, mobile, embedded systems, and advanced technology disciplines.
- Exposure to emerging technologies and opportunities to continuously expand your expertise across multiple areas of software systems engineering.
- A work environment that values thoughtful experimentation, rapid learning, technical curiosity, adaptability, and high-quality execution.
- Remote work opportunity within the United States.
