About the role
The Medical Director serves as the primary clinical authority for the organization, providing oversight of all medical operations, transport personnel, offline protocols, and quality assurance activities. This role ensures that all clinical care
delivered during transport meets or exceeds applicable Ohio EMS regulatory standards, FAA Part 135 requirements, and industry best practice benchmarks consistent with accreditation standards.
What You Will Be Doing
- Clinical Oversight
- Serves as the designated Medical Director in accordance with ORC Chapter
4766 and Ohio State Board of EMS requirements - Develops, reviews, and approves all offline medical protocols on no less than an
annual basis, or sooner following a significant clinical event or regulatory change - Reviews transportation requests and case notes for clinical appropriateness
- Approves the medical equipment, medications, and supplies carried on all
transport aircraft - Establishes and maintains clinical standards consistent with the scope of practice
for all transport personnel
- Serves as the designated Medical Director in accordance with ORC Chapter
- Personnel & Credentialing
- Participates in the hiring and credentialing of all clinical transport personnel,
including review of licensure, certification, and competency documentation - Determines required initial and ongoing education and training for transport
personnel - Ensures all transport personnel maintain competency within their scope of practice
through documented evaluation and skills verification

- Defines and documents the online and online medical control structure for all
transports, including any medical control agreements with receiving hospitals
. - Serves as, or designates a qualified physician to serve as, the medical control
authority for real-time clinical guidance during transport operations

- Oversees the Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement (QA/QI) program,
providing clinical review and recommendations. - Conducts or delegates structured review of adverse events, near-misses, and
sentinel events with findings documented and tracked to resolution

- Reports directly to COO and collaborates with the Director of Operations and
Clinical Supervisor on matters affecting both clinical and flight operations - Acknowledges the distinction between the Medical Director role and the FAA Part
135 certificate holder; clinical authority does not extend to flight operations
decisions - Discloses any conflicts of interest, including financial relationships with vendors
supplying equipment or pharmaceuticals to the company

- Active flight status is required for this role, completing at least one (1) medical flight per quarter.
You Must Have
- Graduate of an accredited medical school with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Board certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, or Critical Care Medicine — or actively board eligible with a plan to achieve certification within 12 months of hire.
- Completion of either NAEMSP National EMS Medical Directors Cours or Ohio ACEP, EMS Medical Directors Course if not board certified in Emergency Medicine.
- Unrestricted medical license in the State of Ohio under ORC Chapter 4731; licensure in additional transport states or eligibility via the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) strongly preferred.
- Current BLS and ACLS provider certification; ATLS, PHTLS, or ITLS required within 90 days of hire if not already held.
- Minimum 3 years (of most recent 5 years) of clinical experience in an acute care, emergency, or critical care setting.
- Familiarity with FAA Part 135 operations and applicable Ohio EMS regulations under OAC Chapter 4765 preferred.
