Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Educational Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in academic and/or career counseling.


Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Student Affairs will provide professional expertise and leadership for student affairs in the designated school or program. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Assistant/Associate Dean for Student Affairs or designated school equivalent to support academic success and provide academic counseling and advising.

Scope:
As designated: academic, research, and/or professional program allows use across GSBS, JSSOM, SON, SHP or SPPH

Job Duties:
  • Monitors the academic progress of all trainees in the designated school or program.
  • Develop criteria for identifying trainees at-risk for academic difficulty.
  • Works in partnership with the Assistant/Associate Dean for Student Affairs to meet with at-risk trainees and those with demonstrated academic or professional difficulty to assess and coordinate assistance based on their needs.
  • Advises Assistant/Associate Dean for Student Affairs on all matters related to student counseling.
  • Refers students and trainees with more complex or multi-factorial problems to university resources when appropriate, including medical and mental health counseling.
  • Partners with designated school leadership to provide career planning resources based on current needs of the student body.
  • Manages the daily activities of direct reports. Ensuring all employees are following UTMB policies and procedures as well as specific policies pertaining to student affairs and professional development.
  • Responsible for staff development which may include creation of formal training and development programs for staff.
  • Will provide budgetary oversight for student seminars, workshops, , and other activities and events focused on student affairs and professional development.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
    Marginal or Periodic Functions:
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Expertise in student academic performance assessment, preferably within the biomedical sciences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent skills in organization and prioritization.
  • Ability to identify and balance a range of student needs and priorities.
  • Supervisory and management skills to effectively direct support staff.
  • Facilitation, coaching, mentoring, feedback skills.


Supervision
Received: Assistant or Associate Dean, Student Affairs
Given: admin staff as assigned

Budget Responsibility
Direct: based on designated school or program
Indirect: based on designated school or program

Decision-Making Responsibility
  • Responsible for decisions related to student academic support.
  • Serves as an advisor to the Assistant or Associate Dean, Student Affairs.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Education, Educational Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in an academic medical center preferred.
  • Supervisory experience.


Salary Range:
Commensurate with experience.
