HVAC Service Technician – Job Description
Position Summary
The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and commissioning commercial and light‑industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. This role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mechanical equipment across client facilities, while delivering a professional, customer‑focused service experience.
Key Responsibilities
Service, Maintenance & Repair
- Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and corrective repairs on RTUs, split systems, VRF/VRV, heat pumps, boilers, pumps, exhaust systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Conduct preventive maintenance including filter changes, belt replacements, coil cleaning, lubrication, and operational checks.
- Execute refrigerant leak checks, recovery, evacuation, and charging in compliance with EPA Section 608.
- Perform electrical testing (voltage, amperage, continuity) and low‑voltage control diagnostics.
- Document all findings, deficiencies, and corrective actions with clarity and accuracy.
System Performance & Commissioning
- Verify airflow, static pressure, temperature differentials, and equipment performance against manufacturer specifications.
- Calibrate thermostats, sensors, and control devices.
- Assist with startup and commissioning of new or replacement equipment.
- Identify energy‑saving opportunities and system optimization improvements.
Customer Interaction & Reporting
- Communicate clearly with clients regarding system conditions, recommended repairs, and safety concerns.
- Provide detailed service reports, deficiency lists, and parts requirements.
- Maintain a professional appearance and represent the company with integrity.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow OSHA, ASHRAE, NEC, and local code requirements.
- Maintain safe work practices including lockout/tagout, ladder safety, and PPE use.
- Ensure refrigerant handling, storage, and disposal meet EPA regulations.
Tools, Equipment & Technology
- Operate standard HVAC tools including gauges, multimeters, combustion analyzers, vacuum pumps, and recovery machines.
- Use mobile service software for work orders, time entry, and documentation.
- Maintain company vehicle, tools, and inventory in clean, organized condition.
Qualifications
Required
- 3–5+ years of commercial HVAC service experience.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Strong diagnostic and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- NYC FDNY G-60 & F-60 FLSD
Preferred
- Experience with BAS/controls (Johnson, Honeywell, Trane, Siemens, etc.).
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
- Knowledge of hydronics, condenser water, and chilled water systems.
- Experience with VRF/VRV systems (Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, work on rooftops, and operate in mechanical rooms.
- Ability to work in hot/cold environments and confined spaces.
