Job Description:
Are you interested in learning how employee benefits and workplace wellness programs support a large public sector workforce? The City of Chesapeake is seeking a motivated and detail oriented Human Resources Intern to join the Employee Benefits and Wellness Division. This internship provides hands on experience in benefits administration, employee wellness initiatives, customer service, and human resources operations while working alongside experienced HR professionals.
This is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing careers in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Promotion, or related fields.

What You’ll Do

Responsibilities may include:
  • Assist with employee benefits enrollment and administrative processes.
  • Help organize and promote employee wellness programs, events, and challenges.
  • Assist with preparing informational materials, presentations, and employee communications.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to routine employee inquiries and directing questions to the appropriate staff.
  • Help maintain confidential HR records and electronic files.
  • Assist with data entry, reporting, and special projects.
  • Support benefits and wellness staff with day to day administrative tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Must be a college student in good academic standing who is majoring in, or a recent college graduate (i.e., within one year of graduation), in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Sciences, Health Promotion, Communications, or a related field.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong customer service skills.

Students participating in the Internship Program will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing their own transportation to and from work,
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by the worksite supervisor.
  • Performing the tasks assigned by the vocational instructor/coordinator and the worksite supervisor in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrating honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn.
  • Conforming to the guidelines of the internship worksite.


Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is a junior, senior, or graduate student who is enrolled in an accredited college or university, or recently graduated (within one year of graduation).

Special Instructions to Applicants:
Fall 2026 internships begin on or after August 17, 2026. The length of the internship may vary depending on the student’s availability. The student may work up to 30 hours per week for a maximum of 360 hours.
