Job Description

Sr. Director & Head of Tax

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Director & Head of Tax based in the United States.

This is a senior finance leadership opportunity to build and own a sophisticated tax function within a fast-growing financial technology environment. You will report directly to the CFO and serve as a key member of the finance leadership team. The role carries end-to-end ownership of tax positions, compliance, risk management, investor reporting, and external tax partnerships across a complex investment platform. You will combine deep technical judgment with hands-on operating leadership, deciding what belongs in-house and where external expertise adds value. Working closely with Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Venture, Engineering, and executive stakeholders, you will influence transactions and structures from the outset. This is a build-focused role for an experienced tax leader who thrives in ambiguity, values autonomy, and is motivated by creating scalable, resilient processes.

Accountabilities
  • Own the organization’s technical tax positions and associated risk, particularly across REIT and RIC structures, documenting conclusions to an audit-defensible standard, assessing exposure, and escalating matters that require external opinions while exercising independent judgment on others.
  • Design and manage the tax delivery model, balancing in-house capabilities with external advisors, offshore or onshore providers, and fund administrators; scope engagements, negotiate fees, establish service levels, manage the tax vendor budget, and implement effective review controls.
  • Lead tax compliance across a complex investment platform, including REIT and RIC qualification, asset and income testing, prohibited transaction analysis, earnings and profits, distribution requirements, federal and state filings, filing calendars, extension strategies, nexus determinations, and ASC 740 provisions aligned with SEC reporting requirements.
  • Oversee investor tax reporting processes, including validation and posting of investor 1099 calculations, review controls, externally prepared K-1s, and collaboration with Investor Relations on investor-facing tax materials and questions.
  • Partner with real estate and venture teams on acquisitions, dispositions, transaction structures, and related documentation, ensuring tax considerations are incorporated while deal terms are being developed.
  • Build a resilient tax function by documenting technical positions, methodologies, recurring processes, and institutional knowledge; identify opportunities to automate manual work and introduce AI-enabled workflows where they create meaningful efficiencies.
  • Lead and develop a small team of senior in-house tax professionals while holding external providers to similarly high standards of quality, accountability, and execution.
  • Work cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Venture, Engineering, and executive stakeholders to evaluate tax implications, communicate risks, and drive decisions without relying on formal authority.
  • Support audits, examinations, regulatory inquiries, and other reviews by providing well-supported documentation and confidently defending established tax positions.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience with deep technical expertise in REIT taxation; this is a core requirement for the position.
  • Strong knowledge of partnership taxation, TRS structures, RIC/Investment Company Act considerations, and Qualified Opportunity Funds is valuable, with demonstrated ability to quickly develop expertise in unfamiliar areas.
  • Proven experience defending tax positions before auditors, regulators, or during examinations, supported by rigorous documentation and analytical discipline.
  • Hands-on experience managing tax work delivered by external advisors, offshore delivery centers, or fund administrators, including critically reviewing and signing off on their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent technical judgments, clearly communicate positions, assess risk, and take ownership of outcomes rather than routinely outsourcing decisions.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills, with the ability to influence Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Venture, Engineering, executives, auditors, board members, and investors without direct reporting authority.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to translate complex tax matters into clear, practical language for non-tax stakeholders.
  • Comfort operating in a small, fast-moving, largely remote organization where processes and answers may need to be created rather than inherited.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience; CPA, JD/LLM, or comparable professional designation preferred.
  • Strong alignment with a mission-driven organization focused on broadening access to investment opportunities.
  • This role is best suited to someone who enjoys building operating models, working with a lean senior team, exercising independent judgment, and creating scalable processes rather than managing a large department or relying heavily on external opinions.
Benefits
  • Salary: $190,000–$230,000 annually.
  • Remote-first work environment for employees living in the United States.
  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance, with contributions toward employee and dependent premiums.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for medical expenses, dependent care, and parking.
  • 401(k) plan with a 3% employer contribution regardless of whether you contribute.
  • Fully covered life insurance and short-term disability coverage.
  • Significant equity participation through an employee stock grant program.
  • Gympass benefit with access to mental health resources.
  • Flexible paid time off (PTO).
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Paid parental leave.
