Job Summary

The Draftsman / Estimator is a dual-role position responsible for interpreting engineering drawings and translating into shop ready layouts for fabrication and aerospace construction projects while also developing accurate cost estimates. He/She will bridge engineering and production by creating detailed drawings, perform precise physical layout to ensure accurate fabrication of structural, piping, plate, and aerospace related components, ensuring strict adherence to specifications, and are competitively priced. Responsibilities and Duties

Drafting & Lofting Duties:

  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and aerospace specifications.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Develop accurate flat patterns for cutting, forming, and assembly of components.
  • Perform lofting/layout work on shop floor.
  • Translate 3D designs into 2D layouts for fabrication and assembly.
  • Support fabrication of aerospace structures, modules, and components with tight tolerances.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements in accordance with aerospace and fabrication standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, QA/QC, and shop personnel to resolve design issues.
  • Assist with fit-up planning and sequencing for assemblies.
  • Generate and interpret isometrics, drawings, and development layouts.
  • Provide field/shop measurements and adjust drawings as needed.
  • Assist in sequencing and planning fabrication processes.
  • Maintain drawing revisions and document control.
  • Ensure all layouts meet quality standards and project specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Estimating & Cost Analysis

  • Review requests for quotes, drawings, and specifications to prepare detailed cost estimates.
  • Identify the Bid Risk Score and input into ACloud.
  • Conduct the estimate including but not limited to the following in accordance with approved procedure.
  • Perform Material Take off all required items.
  • Submit MTO to Purchasing Manager
  • Analyze and calculate Labor Take offs.
  • Provide MTO of customer supplied items when requested.
  • Communicate and work with procurement to ensure complete compilation of material prices.
  • Request all pricing from 3rd Party Vendors.
  • Post awarded and upload all quotes from 3rd party vendors in ACloud.
  • Verify that 3rd party vendors used in estimate are currently Approved Vendors. If vendor is not on list approval to use in the estimate is required from Estimating Manager or VP Estimating.
  • Communicate with Estimating Manager proposal requirements.
  • Pending Estimating Manager request, create proposal and submit to Estimating Manager for final review.
  • Fill out financials section of ACloud.
  • Sit in Estimating/Operations handoff Meetings. Have detailed in depth discussion of scope of project and all assumptions made during the bid process.
  • When required provide support for calculating change orders for PM.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in fabrication, industrial, or aerospace environments.
  • Experience supporting aerospace and industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of drafting principles and fabrication processes.
  • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, Solid works, etc.)
  • Knowledge of industry standards and codes (ASME, AWS, ISO, Aerospace quality standards such as AS9100).
  • Ability to read and interpret structural, piping, mechanical, and Aerospace drawings.
  • Proficient in geometric layout and development (lofting techniques).
  • Understanding of tight tolerance work and precision fabrication requirements.
  • Knowledge of materials used in fabrication and aerospace applications (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum alloys, etc.).
  • Familiarity with welding and fitting processes.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and judgment necessary to perform assigned duties away from a primary office location with minimal supervision.
  • Must have proven ability to plan and execute tasks independently, manage time effectively, communicate progress and issues appropriately, and adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Must have strong organizational and communications skills both verbal and written and demonstrate the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization
  • Must demonstrate the ability to handle simultaneous assignments with frequent interruptions and deliver proven results.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
