The Industrial Electrician I performs semi-skilled and skilled work at an apprentice to a mechanic level involving both rough and finished electrical work. Responsible for troubleshooting electrical motor failures and electric circuitry, preventative maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, remote pumping and treatment stations equipment, and residential grinder pumps and controls. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Utility.


This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed. This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials.



THIS POSITION REQUIRES SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED OVERTIME, INCLUDING EVENINGS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS AND/OR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO EMERGENCY CONDITIONS.

  • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie and Utility Systems Department at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical services in City-owned buildings, and water and wastewater treatment facilities, including electrical outlets, lights, motors, relays, alternators, electrical equipment, starters, breakers, VFDs, transformers, etc.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Works with plant operators to understand plant processes.
  • Assists in other instrumentation and control and electrical maintenance operations.
  • Assists in troubleshooting and repair of process and control equipment.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. College coursework and prior utility experience preferred. A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Completion of electrical training through an accredited apprenticeship program and the ability to obtain a Journeyman Electrician License required or the ability to be obtained within three (3) years from the date of hire.
    1. Prior documented electrical experience may be considered in lieu of an apprenticeship program and specialized training classes may be offered to supplement prior experience toward acquiring the Journeyman Electrician license.
  • Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, codes, and practices of the electrical trade, as well as electric circuitry involving motors, breakers, relays, etc.
  • Skill in the care of the tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, and perform electrical work of average difficulty.
  • Ability to work from blueprints and/or sketches.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, and crouch, work in close, confined spaces and overhead on ladders and platforms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Steel-toe or composite-toe shoes are mandatory.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions that may be adverse and extreme (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, and stressful situations. The employee works with hazardous power tools and is exposed to heights up to 30 feet.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
