Job Description

Senior Synapse Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Synapse Engineer based in Canada.

This role focuses on designing and delivering modern data engineering solutions within a cloud-native Azure environment, with a strong emphasis on Azure Synapse. You will play a key role in transforming legacy ETL workflows into scalable, high-performance data pipelines. Working in a fully remote, collaborative engineering setup, you will contribute to building robust data platforms that support enterprise analytics and decision-making. The position involves close collaboration with data modeling and analytics teams to ensure accuracy and end-to-end integrity of migrated workloads. You will also be responsible for optimizing performance, cost efficiency, and scalability across distributed data systems. This is a high-impact engineering role where architecture, transformation, and operational excellence converge.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize Azure Synapse-based data solutions, ensuring efficient migration of legacy workflows and high-quality data processing at scale.

  • Build and maintain Azure Synapse pipelines, SQL transformations, datasets, and integration components to support enterprise data workflows.
  • Translate legacy Alteryx and ETL logic into scalable Synapse solutions using SQL, PySpark, and data flow technologies.
  • Optimize performance of dedicated SQL pools through tuning strategies such as partitioning, indexing, caching, and workload management.
  • Design and implement CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or Git-based workflows to support automated deployments.
  • Manage data security, including role-based access control (RBAC), row-level security, auditing, and compliance requirements.
  • Optimize data lake structures in ADLS Gen2, including file formats such as Delta and Parquet for efficient storage and processing.
  • Monitor system performance, costs, and scalability while troubleshooting issues across ingestion, transformation, and orchestration layers.
  • Collaborate closely with data modeling and analytics teams to ensure accurate implementation of business and technical requirements.
  • Provide architectural guidance and promote best practices for Synapse platform usage and data engineering standards.
Requirements

The ideal candidate brings deep data engineering expertise with strong experience in Azure Synapse and modern cloud data platform architecture.

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering or related roles, including at least 3+ years working with Azure Synapse.
  • Strong expertise in SQL (T-SQL), ETL/ELT pipeline development, and data transformation at scale.
  • Proven experience migrating or modernizing ETL systems such as Alteryx, SSIS, or Databricks.
  • Solid understanding of cloud data architecture concepts, including Delta Lake, Parquet, partitioning, and schema evolution.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, Git, and environment promotion strategies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to optimize performance, cost, and scalability in distributed data systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, especially with data modeling and analytics stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide technical leadership and architectural direction.
  • Experience in retail or loyalty analytics environments is a plus.
  • Familiarity with data governance tools such as Azure Purview is an advantage.
Benefits
  • Fully remote work flexibility within Canada
  • Competitive compensation aligned with senior-level expertise
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale enterprise cloud data transformation programs
  • Exposure to modern Azure data engineering stack and advanced analytics ecosystems
  • Collaborative engineering environment with cross-functional data teams
  • Career growth opportunities in cloud data architecture and platform engineering
  • Participation in complex migration and modernization initiatives
  • Access to continuous learning and technical upskilling opportunities.
