This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Assistant Designer, Communications based in Canada.

You will join a dynamic engineering environment focused on the design, testing, and optimization of advanced communications and industrial network systems supporting large-scale public transit operations. The role blends hands-on technical design with field coordination, offering exposure to both infrastructure projects and operational problem-solving. You will contribute to improving network reliability, safety, and performance across mission-critical systems. Working closely with senior engineers and maintenance teams, you will help translate design concepts into practical, standards-compliant solutions. The environment is collaborative, detail-oriented, and strongly focused on public service impact. This is an opportunity to develop strong expertise in communications engineering within a complex, real-world operational network.

Accountabilities:
  • Provide technical support for the design, analysis, testing, and coordination of communications and network engineering projects, including system modifications and new implementations.
  • Prepare and review drawings, specifications, estimates, material lists, test procedures, standards, and technical documentation aligned with internal design requirements.
  • Conduct field and desk-based investigations to assess existing systems, troubleshoot operational issues, and identify opportunities for engineering improvements.
  • Support the implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of industrial network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, and related systems.
  • Perform testing, commissioning, and performance evaluation of communications systems to ensure compliance with design standards and operational requirements.
  • Research design standards, codes, and best practices to ensure all outputs meet regulatory and organizational expectations.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintenance staff, contractors, and on-site personnel regarding equipment operation, installations, and inspections.
  • Prepare reports, project updates, and technical documentation to support project tracking and decision-making.
Requirements:
  • Post-secondary education in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in installing, configuring, and supporting Ethernet and enterprise network systems.
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing concepts.
  • Familiarity with network security principles such as firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and encryption technologies.
  • Experience with network design principles, troubleshooting methodologies, and system performance analysis.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (electrical safety, building codes, CSA standards, and related regulations).
  • Proficiency with CADD tools (preferably MicroStation) and MS Office applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Asset: Professional certification (PEO or OACETT), networking certifications, and experience with SONET/SDH systems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and support operational teams outside standard schedules when required.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range aligned with public sector engineering standards
  • Hybrid and flexible work arrangement supporting work-life balance
  • Defined benefit pension plan participation
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and wellness coverage
  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace
  • Structured learning and professional development programs
  • Opportunities for leadership exposure and hands-on infrastructure project experience
  • Stable long-term employment within a large-scale public service organization
