The City of Sandy Springs is looking for a Code Enforcement Officer I to join our Community Development team and help protect the quality, safety, and appearance of our community.
This is more than an office job. You’ll be out in the community conducting inspections, responding to concerns, investigating potential violations, educating residents and businesses about City requirements, and working with property owners and other City departments to help resolve issues.

What You'll DoAs a Code Enforcement Officer I, you will:
Conduct property maintenance inspections and investigations related to zoning, housing, and commercial areas.
Respond to citizen concerns, complaints, and City Council requests.
Visit properties throughout Sandy Springs to identify and document potential code violations.
Explain City codes, ordinances, and requirements to residents, property owners, businesses, and contractors.
Work with individuals to promote voluntary compliance and help resolve issues.
Prepare accurate reports, photographs, case documentation, inspection records, and enforcement-related materials.
Compile documentation and issue summonses with supervisory approval.
Participate in neighborhood meetings to educate residents and answer questions about City codes.
Collaborate with other City departments to address issues and complete enforcement activities.
Testify in municipal court when needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
We're looking for someone who can communicate clearly, think through problems, stay organized, and remain professional when conversations become challenging.
You'll regularly work with residents, property owners, business owners, contractors, City employees, elected officials, and members of the public. The ability to explain requirements clearly, listen to concerns, document facts objectively, and navigate difficult conversations is an important part of this role.
You'll also need to be comfortable working independently in the field while knowing when to involve your supervisor or partner with another department.
What You BringMinimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
At least six (6) months of experience in code enforcement, regulatory enforcement, inspections, investigations, compliance, or related work involving research, complaint resolution, or conflict resolution.
Knowledge of investigative principles, practices, documentation, and due process.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Ability to obtain ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification within 18 months of appointment.
Ability to obtain Georgia Association of Code Enforcement (GACE) Level I certification within 24 months of appointment.
An associate degree in Fire Technology, Environmental Studies, Law Enforcement, Construction Technology, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
Two (2) years of experience in code enforcement or a related regulatory/enforcement field.
ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification.
GACE Level I certification.
Level 1B Soil and Erosion certification.
Knowledge of general construction practices, procedures, and requirements.
Experience with dispute resolution.
Experience interpreting City codes, ordinances, site plans, maps, work plans, property records, or other technical documents.
The Code Enforcement Officer I classification is designed to give you the experience, training, and knowledge needed to grow in the profession.
As you demonstrate proficiency in your assigned duties, meet required competencies, and complete applicable training and certifications, you may be eligible for advancement to the next level within the Code Enforcement classification.
