Job Description
ABOUT THIS ROLE
As a Purchaser, you'll own material sourcing and vendor relationships across our active electrical construction projects. You're a true partner to Project Managers and Foremen: protecting company margin, keeping jobs supplied, and negotiating the pricing and terms that keep us competitive. This is a fast-paced role where field delays are your problem to solve, not someone else's bottleneck. If you're hungry to find savings, sharp with vendors, and ready to own the buyout process from day one, this is built for you.
WHAT WE OFFER
We know skilled purchasers have options. Here's why Serve Electric is worth your look:
- Competitive Pay: A salary that reflects your experience and track record
- Health, dental, vision, life insurance, and HSA
- PTO & Paid Holidays
- 401(k)
- Real Growth Paths: We promote from within and mean it
- A True Partnership Role: Work directly with PMs and Foremen, not as a separate department they have to chase down
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing materials (panels, gear, wire, conduit, devices) for active projects, matching engineering specs and project schedules
- Processing daily material orders from field staff
- Negotiating copper contracts with vendors, locking in pricing and terms to protect against copper price volatility on wire and cable spend
- Managing vendor relationships and negotiating pricing, terms, and lead times with distributors and manufacturers
- Tracking and expediting open POs to prevent schedule delays; proactively flagging material shortages or lead-time risks to PMs
- Maintaining accurate PO records, pricing, and delivery status in Intacct and Remarkable
- Reconciling vendor invoices against POs and receiving records; resolving discrepancies
- Managing the buyout process on new projects, locking in material pricing early to protect estimated margins
- Coordinating deliveries with field/project schedules
- Identifying cost-saving opportunities (bulk buys, alternate vendors, value engineering on specified gear)
- Maintaining key vendor relationships for pricing leverage and priority during shortages
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
Electrical construction purchasing experience is strongly preferred for this role. We are seeking a purchaser with proven experience buying at scale for a contractor or industrial environment- someone who can forecast, negotiate, and manage vendor relationships from day one.
- 3+ years of purchasing experience, ideally with an electrical contractor, in industrial purchasing, or a related trade
- Experience ordering upwards of $5M–$10M in materials annually
- Working knowledge of electrical gear/materials (panels, switchgear, MCCs, wire/cable, conduit, devices)
- Familiarity with copper and steel commodity pricing trends and hedging or fixed-price contract strategies
- Ability to forecast purchasing dollar amounts across active and upcoming projects
- Familiarity with NEMA ratings, conduit types, wire insulation types, and fuse types
- Familiarity with construction submittals for approved materials
- Proven vendor negotiation track record
- Awareness of long-lead-time equipment
- Understanding of manufacturer rep vs. distributor channel structure (who to go to for what)
- Knowledge of freight terms (FOB, prepaid/add) and how they affect landed cost
- Familiarity with tax-exempt purchasing rules and tax rates across multiple states
- Knowledge of warranty terms and return/restocking policies by vendor
- Basic understanding of accounting fundamentals
- ERP/accounting system experience
- Comfortable working with minimal supervision and managing priorities across multiple tasks
- Strong computer skills, with the ability to pick up new software quickly alongside existing word processing and spreadsheet abilities
- Valid driver's license
- Accessible outside of work hours to facilitate orders if/when needed
Nice to have
- Intacct and Remarkable experience
- Previous experience with a local supply house
