SCHEDULE

Monday – Friday, 9:00AM – 4:30PM following the Brentwood School District Calendar (10 months).

SUMMARY

Family Service League is seeking a full-time Pre-School Teacher for our UPK Program. The Teacher will be responsible for teaching children ages 3-5 the fundamental concepts required for kindergarten, including identifying numbers and letters, socializing well with others, and working effectively in a classroom structure. The pre-school teacher will be responsible for aligning the curriculum and expectations of the program in accordance with the guidelines of the Brentwood School district, the Office of Children and Family Services regulations, and the NYS Pre-Kindergarten learning standards. The teacher will participate and collaborate with colleagues to ensure a safe, positive atmosphere and ensure the well-being of children at all times.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Teacher will follow all Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Day Care regulations and policies.
  • Use the Brentwood School District adopted curriculum and materials and supplement curriculum with developmentally appropriate materials, lessons and activities.
  • The Teacher will oversee the Teacher’s Aide and collaborate with the Program Director on the annual performance appraisal.
  • Utilize positive classroom management techniques to guide children's behavior in a firm, positive and nurturing manner.
  • Review expectations and class rules daily.
  • The Teacher will create and use individual behavior management plans when necessary. Include parents as your partners for maximum effectiveness.
  • Conduct assessments in accordance with Brentwood School District guidelines.
  • Complete and send home report cards in accordance with district guidelines.
  • The Teacher will conduct at least one Parent/Teacher conference with each family during the school year; schedule additional conferences as needed.
  • Attend and plan activities for a minimum of one "Family Night."
  • Maintain accurate records and complete all required reports; submit all paperwork in a timely fashion.
  • The Teacher will create and maintain a clean, safe and cheerful classroom environment, with appropriate and varied materials available to students.
  • Keep bulletin boards current and display children's work to reflect what is currently being taught.
  • Serve as a role model for the students.
  • Teacher will demonstrate and facilitate appropriate conflict resolution and model kindness and empathy toward others.
  • Label activity areas and materials in English/Spanish, along with a picture.
  • Display the daily schedule with times and identifying pictures; review the schedule with the children as you transition from activity to activity.
  • The Teacher will meet with the Program Director regularly to discuss issues of concern and suggest changes and/or improvements.
  • In coordination with the Program Director, develop a strategy for remediation and communication with parents for children presenting academic, social, or behavioral concerns. Generate a request for a district evaluation if parents agree to that plan of action.
  • The Teacher will use effective mediation skills for resolving conflicts.
  • Plan innovative and exciting lessons.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education required.

Current NYS Teacher Certification, B-2. N-6, equivalent, or plan to obtain a New York State Teachers Certification in Early Childhood Education within 5 years.

At least six months experience working with children in a classroom setting is required.

Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills required.

Ability to educate with age-appropriate language and teaching methods.

Demonstrated patience, optimism, compassion, enthusiasm, and empathy.

Effective mediation skills for resolving conflicts between children.

Creative mindset to plan innovative, exciting lessons.

Ability to be a positive role model for children and team members.

Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical activities require considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, such as bending, pushing, pulling, walking, stooping, and handling of various types of materials.

Heavy lifting may be required.
