Description:

DEPUTY DIRECTOR

Christie’s Place | San Diego, CA
Full-Time | Exempt | Salary Range: $90,000–$120,000
Onsite: Minimum 4 days/week | Remote: 1 day/week

ABOUT THE ROLE

Christie’s Place is seeking a strategic and grounded Deputy Director to help lead a high-impact organization serving women and families impacted by HIV. This role is for a leader who brings clarity to complexity, follows through, and creates structure that allows both staff and programs to thrive. You’ll partner closely with the Executive Director to ensure that day-to-day operations run smoothly, teams are supported and accountable, and services are delivered with consistency, quality, and care. We’re looking for someone who is calm under pressure, solutions-oriented, and able to hold both people and systems with equal strength.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Lead Operations with Clarity

  • Oversee daily operations across programs in a high-volume service environment
  • Build and maintain clear, efficient systems and workflows that reduce friction and support staff success
  • Ensure consistency, follow-through, and accountability across teams
  • Monitor program performance and proactively address gaps

Strengthen Teams & Accountability

  • Lead HR functions including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and employee relations
  • Provide direct, supportive supervision while setting clear expectations and boundaries
  • Address challenges early, constructively, and with professionalism
  • Foster a culture of ownership, respect, and reliability

Ensure a High-Quality Client Experience

  • Maintain a welcoming, responsive, and culturally competent environment
  • Set the tone for professionalism and customer service across all programs
  • Resolve concerns thoughtfully, with attention to both client and organizational needs

Drive Reporting & Operational Excellence

  • Oversee accurate, timely program reporting and compliance
  • Support grant writing and funder communications with clear, concise narratives
  • Use data to inform decisions and strengthen program outcomes

Partner in Leadership

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to translate strategy into action
  • Help prioritize, organize, and move key initiatives forward
  • Contribute to a leadership culture that is steady, transparent, trauma-informed, culturally humble, and solutions-focused

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 7–10+ years of leadership experience in operations, HR, and program management
  • Strong experience supervising staff and managing performance with consistency and fairness
  • Background in high-volume service settings (community health center, clinic, or social services preferred)
  • Strong experience working with clients and community members from diverse and marginalized backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to build systems, manage details, and follow through
  • Experience with reporting, compliance, and grant-funded programs
  • Excellent judgment, communication, and organizational skills

You tend to be someone who:

  • Brings structure where there is ambiguity
  • Communicates directly and respectfully
  • Follows through on commitments
  • Wants to work onsite
  • Stays steady in challenging situations
  • Focuses on solutions rather than escalation

Bonus:

  • Experience in HIV services, public health, or community-based organizations
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Experience with compliance, reporting, and grant-funded programs
  • Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation
