Job Description
Job Summary: Courtesy Clerks are responsible for efficient management of shopping carts, bagging customer purchases, and the general maintenance of the store during hours of operation. Additional duties may be assigned to facilitate store operations and to promote customer service.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: The following are the essential job duties; other duties may be assigned by management to facilitate store operations and to promote excellent customer service.
- Greets and assists customers by providing information, answering questions on location, price, and use of merchandise, providing information on store procedures, and resolving their complaints
- Fills customer orders by obtaining items from shelves, freezers, coolers, bins, tables, or containers
- Wraps or bags merchandise for customers
- Stamps, marks, or applies price tags on merchandise
- Maintains a clean and orderly checkout area
- Stocks shelves, counters, or tables with merchandise
- Sets up advertising displays and stocks shelves, coolers, counters, bins, tables, freezers, containers or trays with merchandise to promote sales
- Clean shelves, counters, tables, bins, coolers, and restrooms
- Assists customers with packages if their cars are in adjacent parking lots
- Retrieves shopping carts in a timely manner and arranges them in an orderly fashion for customer use. Reports faulty carts to management for repairs.
- Maintains cleanliness of shopping carts by regularly washing and scrubbing carts by hand or by using a pressure washer
- Maintains a clean store by sweeping and mopping floors as needed or required
- Cleans customer restrooms as needed or required
- Follows proper timekeeping procedures to correctly record hours worked
Knowledge: To perform the job successfully, a courtesy clerk will have the following basic knowledge.
- Customer Service: Knowledge of how to provide excellent customer service. This includes responding promptly to customer needs, asking customers if assistance is needed, being able to tell when something is wrong, and actively looking for ways to help people
- Basic Mathematics: Able to perform simple mathematical functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing quickly and correctly. Also being able to solve simple problems that require calculations.
- English Language: Able to convey information clearly and accurately in the English language. Able to read and understand memos and policies and then apply ideas to situations
Skills and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, a courtesy clerk will have the following skills and abilities:
- Technical Skills: Ability to assess one’s own strength and decide if additional help or equipment is needed to complete a task safely. Ability to work with equipment safely and efficiently.
- Customer Service: Ability to listen carefully, show self-control and not over react in stressful situations, attention to detail, patience to tolerate unusual situations, concern for others, and initiative to provide excellent service.
- Teamwork: Being open to different views and new ideas, cooperating with others, being a team player, and being dependable.
- Professionalism: Respecting others, accepting responsibility and feedback to constantly improve, striving for accuracy and thoroughness in work, meeting deadlines and always being honest.
- Communication: Ability to speak clearly so that customers, supervisors, and co-workers can understand.
- Reading: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and memos.
- Problem Solving: Ability to handle problems in a calm and positive manner.
- Physical: Ability to use proper body mechanics principles throughout the day to avoid fatigue and overworking muscles.
Education: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is desired; minimum of three months of related customer service or retail experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience is desired.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places, outside weather conditions and moderate to extreme cold. Noise level is usually moderate to loud.
