This role offers the opportunity to lead global sourcing strategies that directly impact product availability, cost efficiency, sustainability, and supply chain resilience. The Global Packaging Commodity Manager will own the development and execution of packaging category strategies while collaborating with teams across operations, engineering, quality, and product development. You will influence supplier partnerships, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and support innovation within a highly regulated life sciences environment. This position requires strategic thinking, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to manage complex global supply networks. The ideal candidate is a proactive procurement leader who can translate market insights into actionable strategies and deliver measurable business outcomes.
- Develop and execute global sourcing and category strategies for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging materials aligned with business objectives, cost targets, quality standards, and supply continuity goals.
- Lead supplier selection, negotiations, contracting activities, and performance management for strategic packaging suppliers across multiple regions.
- Partner with Operations, Quality, Engineering, Supplier Quality, Planning, Research & Development, and New Product Introduction teams to support product launches, design changes, supplier qualifications, and value engineering initiatives.
- Drive total cost of ownership improvements through market analysis, should-cost modeling, productivity programs, supplier consolidation, and strategic sourcing initiatives.
- Manage packaging supplier relationships to improve performance, reliability, innovation, and sustainability outcomes.
- Monitor global market trends, raw material conditions, supplier capacity, and supply chain risks to proactively develop mitigation strategies.
- Support packaging optimization initiatives focused on cost reduction, sustainability, efficiency, and improved supply chain performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure packaging solutions meet business, regulatory, and customer requirements.
- Provide executive-level insights, recommendations, and sourcing strategies based on financial analysis and market intelligence.
- Ensure a resilient, competitive, and compliant global packaging supply base that supports long-term business growth.
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Packaging Engineering, Business, Engineering, or a related strategic sourcing discipline.
- 9+ years of experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, or category management with direct responsibility for packaging materials in a global organization.
- Proven success developing category strategies, leading complex supplier negotiations, and delivering measurable improvements in cost, service, quality, and working capital.
- Experience managing supplier performance and leading cross-functional initiatives involving operations, quality, planning, engineering, and product development teams.
- Strong analytical and financial skills with the ability to evaluate market trends, build business cases, and translate insights into sourcing decisions.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence teams across a matrixed global organization.
- Experience working with packaging materials and processes, including corrugate, labels, inserts, films, molded components, and printed materials is preferred.
- Knowledge of supplier qualification processes, change control, and regulated industry requirements is highly valued.
- Experience supporting packaging strategies within medical device, diagnostics, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or other regulated industries is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to drive sustainability initiatives, packaging optimization, and supply chain risk mitigation.
- Ability to travel up to 20% for supplier visits, manufacturing site meetings, and partner engagements.
- Competitive annual salary range of $120,000 - $128,000, with eligibility for bonus and incentive compensation.
