Data Governance Lead

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Data Governance Lead based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to shape enterprise data strategy and governance practices within a large-scale modernization initiative.
You will design and operationalize governance frameworks that improve data quality, accessibility, security, and business value.
The position combines strategic leadership, process improvement, change management, and technical expertise in a mission-driven environment.
You will collaborate with stakeholders across technology, operations, and governance teams to establish sustainable data practices.

Accountabilities:

The Data Governance Lead will be responsible for developing, implementing, and scaling enterprise data governance capabilities. This role will establish governance structures, improve data management practices, and drive adoption through effective operational processes and organizational change strategies.

  • Develop and maintain an enterprise-level data governance framework aligned with modernization goals and organizational needs.
  • Define and refine data governance roadmaps using industry best practices and maturity assessment models.
  • Create and maintain data standards, policies, procedures, and documentation covering data quality, metadata, privacy, classification, retention, and sharing.
  • Establish governance roles, responsibilities, workflows, success metrics, and repeatable processes for data owners, stewards, custodians, and users.
  • Provide guidance on metadata management, data catalogs, lineage processes, and governance platform implementation.
  • Implement and improve governance tooling, including metadata management, data profiling, cataloging, and monitoring solutions.
  • Develop operational processes for data handling, quality management, privacy controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Establish workflows for data access requests, approvals, escalations, and governance decision-making.
  • Implement automated data validation, monitoring, and reporting capabilities to improve data reliability.
  • Lead change management initiatives to promote adoption of governance practices across teams and stakeholders.
  • Create training materials, communication plans, and enablement resources to support a data-driven culture.
  • Collaborate with security, engineering, business, and governance teams to ensure responsible data use and compliant data sharing.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced data governance professional with a strong background in enterprise data management, governance frameworks, and operationalizing data practices within complex environments. They should be comfortable bridging technical concepts and business requirements while leading organizational change.

  • Master’s degree in information systems or related field with 12+ years of general experience and 10+ years of specialized experience, or equivalent experience based on education level.
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise data governance programs and implementing governance frameworks.
  • Experience translating governance strategies and policies into practical operational processes.
  • Strong understanding of data quality management, metadata management, data stewardship models, and governance structures.
  • Experience managing high-sensitivity or regulated data environments with strict compliance requirements.
  • Experience defining and implementing enterprise data standards across multiple teams and delivery environments.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, integration patterns, and change data capture concepts.
  • Experience with data quality profiling, monitoring approaches, and governance tooling.
  • Familiarity with metadata and catalog platforms such as Collibra, Alation, or Qlik.
  • Experience implementing business glossaries, data lineage capabilities, and modern data governance solutions.
  • Ability to translate technical metadata and governance concepts into clear business documentation.
  • Experience implementing data privacy controls, access management practices, and compliant data-sharing processes.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead change initiatives and promote adoption of new processes and standards.
