Registered Nurse (RN) ASC


Position Purpose

The Registered Nurse (RN) ASC provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, including assessment, treatment, care planning, and evaluation, following established clinical standards and regulatory requirements. This role assists physicians and staff in coordinating patient care and serves as the primary point of contact between patients, staff, and physicians throughout the procedural visit.


Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks
  • Verifies informed consent for procedures and ensures patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility policy.
  • Obtains and documents health history, vital signs, allergies, current medications, and risk factors; performs a focused preprocedure nursing assessment.
  • Provides patient care in accordance with practice guidelines, standards of care, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Documents assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic medical record according to established charting practices.
  • Maintains and reviews patient charts, ensuring accurate and timely documentation to support a complete clinical record.
  • Assures and documents appropriate patient follow up, including postprocedure instructions and pathology or biopsy result communication as directed.
  • Responds to incoming patient calls related to scheduled procedures, prep instructions, and postprocedure questions.
  • Provides safe, competent assistance to the physician during endoscopic procedures (e.g., EGD, colonoscopy), including patient positioning, monitoring, and medication administration under physician order.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of endoscopic equipment, procedure trays, and instrumentation used in the facility.
  • Administers moderate sedation and other medications per facility protocol, physician orders, and state nursing scope of practice; monitors patients for response and complications.
  • Continuously assesses patient status throughout the procedure and recovery period, initiating corrective or emergency measures as needed.
  • Provides clear pre and postprocedure teaching and discharge instructions to patients and caregivers.
  • Maintains competency in scope reprocessing and high level disinfection procedures per facility protocol and manufacturer guidelines (or coordinates with GI tech/reprocessing staff, depending on facility structure).
  • Participates in quality improvement activities, infection control practices, and safety initiatives specific to the ASC setting.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings and required in-services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    EDUCATION: RN degree. Completion of nursing training from an accredited school of nursing.

    EXPERIENCE: Professional nursing experience, gastroenterology experience and IV placement experience preferred.

    REQUIREMENTS: Current state registered nurse license. Current BLS certificate.

    Performance Requirements:

  • Knowledge of nursing processes; health care systems, structure, and functions; and community resources. Understanding of health care technology, equipment, and supplies. Familiarity with state law on nursing care, nurse practice guidelines, and policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of chart/medical record documentation requirements and federal/state laws related to release of health care information.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Skill and knowledge in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Skill in time management, problem solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response calmly and effectively.
  • Skill in patient triage in person and on the phone.
  • Ability to read and interpret physicians’ orders.
  • Ability to calculate and administer drug dosages and injections and document results.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
