Central Supply Technician – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, Central Supply Technicians play a vital role in supporting safe, high-quality patient care by ensuring surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are properly cleaned, sterilized, assembled, and available when needed. As a Central Supply Technician, you will play an essential role in maintaining the integrity of the sterilization process, supporting perioperative services, and helping ensure clinicians have the equipment they need to provide exceptional patient care. A typical day for a Central Supply Technician may include:

  • Performing the decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment in accordance with established standards and best practices
  • Operating instrument washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers, and other specialized equipment while following departmental policies and manufacturer guidelines
  • Inspecting surgical instruments and equipment for cleanliness, proper function, and damage before assembly and sterilization
  • Preparing and assembling surgical trays and case carts accurately to support scheduled procedures and efficient operating room workflow
  • Selecting appropriate sterilization containers, wraps, and pouches based on instrument type while ensuring proper labeling and documentation
  • Performing sterilizer quality assurance testing, monitoring sterilization cycles, and documenting results to verify compliance with regulatory and organizational standards
  • Managing inventory levels of instruments and supplies to support uninterrupted clinical operations and timely case preparation
  • Using cleaning agents, disinfectants, and sterilization chemicals safely while following infection prevention practices and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Collaborating with operating room staff and other clinical departments to obtain needed instruments and equipment promptly while supporting efficient patient care
  • Assisting with staff orientation, on-the-job training, and departmental education while contributing to a collaborative, quality-focused work environment

You hold current certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), as required by the New Jersey Department of Health. You are committed to participating in hands-on departmental education and ongoing training while demonstrating strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Weekend, on-call and holiday availability is required as part of this full-time evening shift opportunity.
