Gateway West is searching for a new Shelter Supervisor to join our mission of building better tomorrows for people in Albuquerque!

LOCATION:
7440 Jim McDowell

SCHEDULE: Full-time, flexible to support weekend and holidays as needed to keep shelter operations running smoothly.

ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is the City’s largest shelter and serves an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people. The shelter offers a safe and welcoming environment to men and women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. Gateway Center provides low, barrier, trauma informed overnight beds for transition to housing. The shelter provides easy access to services needed for case management, job searching, and other supportive services. Success is an exit to safe, stable housing, and a plan for ongoing support.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT SHELTER SUPERVISOR?

    Your experience in leadership and staff management. You have a proven ability to supervise and support staff in a high-demand environment, ensuring staff are effective in their roles and providing quality service to guests. Your skills in crisis management and conflict resolution. You are able to de-escalate guest behavior situations, providing effective conflict resolution to maintain a safe and supportive environment. You understand the importance of data management. You are proficient in entering and managing census data, including using systems such as the Citywide Emergency Bed Tracker to ensure accurate reporting. You can own operations oversight. You bring expertise in maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and safety of shelter common areas and ensuring that staff and guests adhere to shelter protocols. Your are knowledgeable of discipline and appeals processes. You can manage enforcement and reporting on guest discipline policies, working closely with the shelter leadership to ensure consistency and fairness in addressing behavior situations. You are trauma-informed always. You understand the impact of trauma on an individual's physical and mental health, creating a respectful, safe, and non-judgmental environment where people can receive support and services free of stigma.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
Your efforts will directly contribute to the success of the shelter program's impact in Albuquerque. As the Shelter Supervisor, you will oversee the daily operations of the shelter during assigned shifts. This includes maintaining a clean and orderly environment in common areas, ensuring proper staffing, managing guest belongings, and assisting in the implementation and enforcement of shelter policies. You will also be responsible for entering census data and providing leadership during guest behavior situations to ensure the safety and well-being of all shelter occupants. You will be key in supervising staff, ensuring compliance with shelter protocols, and supporting the Associate Director in the overall operation of the facility.

Staff Supervision & Support

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and performance oversight to shelter staff during assigned shifts, ensuring high-quality service delivery and adherence to shelter policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate shift coverage, staff schedules, and activity planning for common areas; support process improvements and help maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment.

Guest Management & Discipline

  • Support the implementation of systems for managing guest belongings and ensure consistent application of guest discipline and appeals processes.
  • Lead de-escalation efforts during guest behavior incidents to maintain safety and stability in the shelter; may be required to drive a 15-passenger van to transport referrals and guests to designated locations.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Enter daily aggregate census data into the Citywide Emergency Bed Tracker (evening shift only).
  • Maintain accurate documentation of guest interactions, incidents, and shift activity, reporting key updates to the Associate Director.

Shelter Operations & Cleanliness

  • Oversee the condition and use of common areas, ensuring cleanliness, order, and compliance with shelter expectations at all times.
  • Support operational needs by monitoring supply levels and ensuring staff have the tools and resources required to perform their duties effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

    High School Diploma. Minimum of 2 years in social services or shelter management, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role. Previous supervisory experience in a shelter or similar environment is highly desirable. Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and client management software. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed.
Other requirements

    Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles and a commitment to applying them in practice. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competency. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
