Position Summary

The Environmental Services (EVS) Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within assigned areas of the facility. The EVS Technician supports infection prevention efforts through proper cleaning, disinfection, waste handling, linen management, and participation in cleanliness improvement initiatives in accordance with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and industry guidelines.

Department Summary

An Environmental Services (EVS) Porter Technician is responsible for performing routine and project-based floor care, managing waste handling and transport (including trash, hazardous, and regulated medical waste), and supporting linen collection and distribution. The role includes cleaning outpatient and public areas to uphold infection prevention standards, assisting with pest control activities per facility protocols, and completing office moves and event setups. All duties are carried out with a focus on efficiency and safety.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • 2-3 years of institutional cleaning experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with infection control procedures preferred.
  • Previously knowledge of cleaning chemical use and safe handling preferred.

Department Qualifications

  • Previous knowledge related to proper waste handling, transport, and disposal preferred.
  • Previous experience with hard and soft surface floor care maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of assigned areas, including clinical, non-clinical, and public spaces.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces using approved products and procedures.
  • Follow established infection prevention protocols, including isolation, precautionary cleaning, and PPE use as applicable to assigned areas.
  • Collect, handle, transport, and dispose of waste, including general waste, regulated medical waste, and recyclable materials, in accordance with facility policies.
  • Handle, transport, and stage soiled and clean linen in accordance with infection control and linen management procedures.
  • Ensure proper segregation of waste streams to prevent contamination.
  • Replenish supplies such as paper products, soap, and hand hygiene materials.
  • Perform floor care duties including mopping, vacuuming, and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with periodic and deep cleaning activities, including project-based work as assigned.
  • Participate in departmental improvement initiatives related to patient experience, including HCAHPS and overall hospital cleanliness.
  • Respond to service requests, spills, and urgent cleaning needs in a timely manner.
  • Safely operate cleaning equipment and perform routine care and maintenance to ensure proper function; report malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
  • Use chemicals and cleaning products according to manufacturer instructions and facility safety guidelines.
  • Complete required departmental and facility education and training within established timeframes.
  • Perform assigned work or duties within expected timelines.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Adhere to OSHAA, CDC, and organizational safety policies.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, professional behavior expectations and appearance standards.
  • Report hazards, safety concerns, and incidents promptly.
  • Maintain accurate daily log and assignment sheets.

Department Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Pest Control
    • Assists in performing pest control remediation.
    • Notifies pest control vendor in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
  • Floor Care
    • Daily hard surface maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, and auto scrubbing.
    • Potential to perform periodic restorative tasks including stripping, waxing, and burnishing of hard surface floors.
    • Daily vacuuming and spot cleaning of carpeted floors.
    • Potential to perform periodic restorative tasks including carpet scrubbing and extraction.
    • Maintains accurate floor logs and checklists as appropriate.
    • Uses wet floor signs appropriately and adheres to other necessary safety protocols.
    • May assist with floor care equipment repairs.
  • Waste Collection and Disposal.
    • Performs trash disposal duties as assigned:
      • Collects and transports solid waste to designated disposal locations.
    • Handles, labels, and collects regulated medical waste, sharps, pharmaceutical, and hazardous waste containers and stores in appropriate areas in compliance with EPA regulations.
    • Operates the autoclave, cart tipper, and trash compactor in compliance with the Stark County Health Dept, EPA regulations, and hospital policy.
  • Linen Collection
    • Collection and handling of soiled linen from designated areas within the facility.
    • Job is aerobically challenging and requires a high degree of physical activity.
    • Repetitively lifting laundry bags and hoisting overhead onto soiled laundry carts.
    • Operation of the motorized Tuggar for collection of soiled linen.
    • Removal, hanging, and laundering of cubical curtains.
    • Maintain accurate linen logs.
  • Additional Project Work
    • Project work includes but is not limited to cleaning of walls, vents, lights, stairwells, elevators, waste storage locations.
  • Supports internal operations by performing or assisting with office moves, furniture moves, and event setups.

Working Conditions

Colleagues may be assigned to different locations within the foundation.

  • Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
  • Ability to work shifts of at least 8 hours, and occasionally longer.
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Every other weekend and three holidays a year, in a group rotation.

Hazardous Exposure Category

Category I - Includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for spills or splashes of, or mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
