Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, seeks a highly motivated Senior Engineering Technician to join our Great Lakes Initiative Team. As a Senior Engineering Technician, you will join a highly motivated conservation team of biologists and engineers who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Primary responsibilities will be focused in Michigan and northern Ohio. A hybrid schedule may be considered, with the potential to work remotely (home office) and within USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) offices, within the area of geographic responsibilities, in limited capacity.

Responsibilities:

DU Engineering Technicians perform a full range of surveying, drafting, and construction management functions on wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects. Responsibilities will include work on Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) wetlands in the Lake Erie Watershed as well as restoration projects on private, state, and federal land in Michigan and Ohio. Project delivery responsibilities include survey, engineering design drafting, project bidding, field inspection, and construction management. A close working relationship with local, state, federal, private landowners, and other conservation partners will be an important aspect of the job. The position will include overnight travel.

Specific duties include:

• Coordinate with design Engineers and senior Engineering Technicians on project related tasks.
• Assist with communication of restoration project status with the Regional Biologists and project partners.
• Perform topographic surveys using total station and GPS survey equipment.
• Provide AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting support. Applicants should be familiar with:

• Preparation of topographic survey drawings;
• Land development plans;
• Preparation of detailed design drawings from engineering notes, sketches and/or other drawings, including integration of data from a variety of sources (e.g., LiDAR, GPS, total-station, laser level);
• Cross-sections, alignments, corridors, feature lines, profiles, earthwork and grading tools, and quantity calculation methods;
• Drafting details needed for permit applications;
• Construction/staking plans;
• Preparation of as-built/record drawings.

• Conduct field inspection and perform construction management oversight as needed. Field work includes strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions. Must be willing to learn to operate and haul ATV and outboard boat when necessary. Overnight travel will be required and work may extend outside normal business hours. Working on weekends is not a common occurrence.
• Ensure that consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules.
• Represent DU with local, state, and federal personnel, and private landowners, along with other mitigation and conservation partners, in a professional manner at all times.

Qualifications:

• A two-year technical degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the construction industry is preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
• Oral, written, and communication skills are essential. Must be self-motivated, goal oriented, and able to work with and solve problems in close team-based relationships.
• Experience with Civil3D, land surveying, and construction inspection is desired. Knowledge and experience with USDA Farm Bill programs is a plus.
