Job Purpose/Function: The Fixed Route Driver will operate vehicles in the Norwalk Transit District’s Fixed Route department, providing transportation for passengers in a safe, courteous, and professional manner in Norwalk and its surrounding communities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle; sets correct destination and route signs
- Operates assigned vehicle, safely and comfortably in all types of weather and traffic conditions, according to printed passenger schedules and Operator's schedules in accordance with company policy and local, state, and federal laws.
- Clearly and professionally communicate when making verbal announcements and when using the bus radio.
- Operate the bus stop announcements (Talking Bus) and other systems on the bus as required.
- Arrives and signs in on time; works hours as scheduled; wears clean, neat uniforms
- Picks up and discharges passengers at designated bus stops safely; regulates heating and ventilating equipment on the bus for the comfort of passengers
- Follows fare collection procedures, which include monitoring fare deposits, issuing transfers when requested, counts transfers received, guards against transfer abuse; hands in fare box at end of shift.
- Reports all accidents, incidents, or unusual occurrences to the dispatch office immediately; accurately completes and submits written reports on accidents, incidents or unusual occurrences as required
- Accurately completes time cards, run cards bus defect cards and other required forms.
- Follows and enforces policy, regulation, rules and regulations of the Company
- Adheres to all regulations related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); correctly operates wheelchair lift with proper safety restraints as requested by the customer
- Provides transit information to passengers as needed
Safety & Security:
Responsible for contributing to a safe and secure work environment. Is cognizant of surroundings and acts in a safe manner at all times. Is knowledgeable of and adheres to OSHA, NTD and other safety standards, directives and advisories, both written and verbal. Uses safety equipment and protective clothing as appropriate and necessary. Maintains good housekeeping habits in work area to avoid injury to self or others. Immediately reports to their respective supervisor or Manager of Safety and Security any safety or security issue and makes recommendations for improvement. Observes building access restrictions and locks doors when not present. Knows the nearest two safety exits and participates in safety drills.
This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time
- Ability to operate in adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to push / pull weight resistance up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to bend / squat / reach frequently
