Provides emergency communications and emergency medical dispatch instruction in accordance with all required protocols for E-911 for the City of Worcester, Towns of Shrewsbury, Westborough, and Leicester, as well as dispatching and flight coordination for UMass Memorial Life Flight, as well as other aeromedical programs who may require communications assistance.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Receives E-911 calls for the City of Worcester, and the Towns of Shrewsbury, Westborough, and Leicester. Verifies caller address and call back number and provides emergency medical dispatch instruction to all E-911 callers in a timely fashion. Dispatches the closest emergency ambulance to the caller’s location. Enters all calls and times into the Computer Aided Dispatch Program. Triages simultaneous calls to the appropriate services as directed.
2. Coordinates the appropriate first responder, such as Worcester/Shrewsbury Police or Fire, to allow for the most effective and efficient response to an emergency in the City of Worcester.
3. Receives requests and dispatches emergency helicopters. Gathers pertinent patient information. Establishes helicopter landing zones. Develops landing zone latitude/longitude using computer mapping program and relays to the flight crew. Develops flight plans for all flights. Ensures of a safe landing zone prior to the aircraft arrival. Coordinates all ground transportation of a patient to and from the helicopters. Reads aviation weather forecasts as requested by the pilot on duty.
4. Obtains and verifies acceptance of all helicopter patients to the receiving hospital. Performs conference call with the sending agency’s physician and a UMass Memorial accepting physician gathering patient information during the call for the flight crew.
5. Enters all calls into a helicopter computer aided dispatch program. Monitors aircraft by obtaining latitude and longitude and plot this information to an aviation sectional map.

1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High school graduate.
2. Massachusetts certified EMT-Basic.
3. CPR and First Aid certification required.
Preferred:
1. Emergency Medical Dispatch/Pre-arrival Instruction Certificate from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch preferred.
2. EMT experience preferred.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. 1-year emergency medical dispatch experience.
2. Must have exceptional customer service skills which include strong interpersonal and communication skills.
3. Must be able to function independently, prioritizing workload while dealing with stressful situations.
4. Must be able to interact with all levels of personnel from physician to patient. Must have computer proficiency.
5. Must have thorough knowledge of hospital and interdepartmental functions.
Preferred:
1. Enhanced E-911 certificate from the Massachusetts Statewide Emergency. Telecommunications board is preferred.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
