Description:

I. BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for providing comprehensive health care to pediatric patients and adolescents in collaboration with physicians, their families, and the health care team while improving the health and well-being of school-age youth in school-based settings.

II. INTRADEPARTMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Department Officer: Chief Medical Officer

Reports to: Chief Medical Officer and/or Associate Medical Director

Supervises: This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities; however, may provide clinical guidance to support staff as appropriate.

III. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Practices independently within the full scope of nurse practitioner licensure and certification, consulting with a physician for clinical situations outside of Nurse Practitioner (NP) scope of practice or when additional guidance is warranted.

2. Identifies clients requiring specialized care or services beyond the scope of the NP role and coordinates appropriate referrals to other providers, Center staff, and/or community resources as clinically indicated.

3. Performs and interprets diagnostic and screening tests as appropriate.

4. Consults with staff members regarding the comprehensive health care of clients and their families.

5. Practices in a school-based setting, providing accessible healthcare where students learn and thrive.

6. Delivers preventive, acute, and chronic disease management services to school-age children and adolescents, with the expectation of expanding services to all school-age populations as the program grows.

7. Develops and maintains appropriate policies, protocols, records, reports, and statistical data relevant to services provided.

8. Ensures that protocols developed with Center clinicians are current and adequate for nurse practitioner practices.

9. Participates in staff service programs.

10. Addresses the unique physical, emotional, behavioral, and social health needs of school-age patients.

11. Collaborates closely with school staff, behavioral health professionals, care teams, and families.

12. Contributes to health equity and student success through meaningful, community-centered care.

13. Works within an integrated care model that includes medical, behavioral health, and community support services.

14. Maintains and adheres to a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a licensed Missouri physician.

15. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state privacy laws, including HIPAA and FERPA, in all aspects of client care and recordkeeping.

IV. PERIODIC DUTIES:

1. Participates in Health Center staff problem-solving groups.

2. Attends and participates in department meetings, etc. as assigned.

3. Performs other duties as assigned.

V. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Inside Center: All inclusive.

Outside Center: Clients, community organizations and agencies, professional colleagues, professional organizations, and institutions of learning.

VI. APPROVED WORK LOCATIONS:

1. Carondelet

2. Dutchtown

3. Forest Park Southeast

4. University City

5. Rung for Women

6. Places for People

7. Any other approved locations added in the future.

VII. QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with nurse practitioner specialization from an accredited program required.

2. Licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Missouri required.

3. Board Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) required.

4. Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.

5. Ability to obtain and maintain DEA registration for the purpose of prescribing controlled substances, as applicable to scope of practice required.

6. Ability to establish and maintain a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a licensed Missouri physician required.

7. Demonstrated experience working with school-age children, adolescents, and young adults required.

8. Knowledge of school-age and adolescent preventive care, behavioral health screening, reproductive health, sports physicals, school health requirements, and chronic disease management required.

9. Must successfully complete a criminal background check and state fingerprinting as required for school-based employment in Missouri.

10. Commitment to serving diverse and underserved populations required.

11. School-based health, pediatric, adolescent medicine, family medicine, community health, or FQHC experience preferred.

12. Experience collaborating with schools, community agencies, and multidisciplinary care teams preferred.

VIII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to stand, walk, and move between classrooms and buildings throughout the school day.

2. Ability to occasionally lift or assist a patient (up to 25 lbs.).

3. Ability to sit for extended periods and operate standard office and clinical equipment.

4. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to perform physical assessments and communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.

IX. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS:

1. Active professional development as demonstrated through attendance of seminars, continued education programs, etc. is strongly encouraged.

2. Current membership and active participation in the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Public Health Association (APHA), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP), or other relevant professional nursing or nurse practitioner organizations is encouraged.

X. CONTINUED EDUCATION:

Satisfactory maintenance of continuing education standards as established by the Missouri Board of Nursing is required.

XI. CONFIDENTIALITY:

Respect for and maintenance of client and staff confidentiality is required. The employee must comply with all applicable federal and state privacy regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), in all aspects of client care, communication, and recordkeeping within the school-based health setting.
