Job Description:
As a Mission Design Engineer at AstroForge, you will have a unique opportunity to support the creation of the first successful asteroid-mining vehicle. You will collaborate across engineering disciplines to design and implement advanced navigation filters, pioneer the use of commercial ground stations for deep space tracking, and contribute to mission operations. Your expertise will be a key enabler for the success of our interplanetary missions.

Responsibilities:
  • Design complex low-thrust deep space trajectories to get mining vehicles to asteroids and return ore to Earth
  • Conduct trade studies for asteroid selection and vehicle design in coordination with other scientists and engineers
  • Refine and mature trajectories from conceptual design through flight, including using different toolsets and fidelity levels as needed
  • Build toolchains and processes to speed up and automate trajectory development
  • Plan, validate, and reconstruct maneuver sequences for spacecraft in flight
  • Support spacecraft flight operations as a Flight Dynamics subject matter expert, including monitoring and troubleshooting navigation performance and optimizing maneuver design
  • Support navigation filter development for coupled trajectory-navigation optimization
  • Document designs, simulations, and test results to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
  • Stay updated with the latest development sin mission design and trajectory optimization

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of optimization techniques and numerical methods, including practical implementations
  • Deep background in orbital mechanics, preferably including multi-body systems and low thrust electric propulsion
  • Experience with mission design and optimization tools such as STK, GMAT, Copernicus, or Mystic, among others
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced environment.

Salary
100k -160k

ITAR Requirements
To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Government.
