The Economic Development Specialist-Business Services position is an integral part of the City’s Strategic Plan contributing to the creation and implementation of programs and initiatives focused on strengthening Centennial’s economy through our business community. This position operates as a program manager, project lead, team member and individual contributor on a variety of projects. The ideal candidate will be outgoing and thrive in a networking and relationship building role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job, with or without accommodation.
Physical Demands
The person in this position must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time; needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Occasionally moves office equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. The person in this position frequently communicates with Council members, staff, vendors, and residents; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Must be able to identify Council members, staff, vendors, and residents, as applicable. Must be able to observe, assess, record, and interpret information.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office setting with in-person, video conference, and telephone contacts. Work will require in-person meetings with businesses and attendance at morning and evening meetings.
Equipment Used/Required
Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy/fax machine, and computer printer.

- Develop and manage the City’s business retention, expansion, and attraction programs for primary employers and target industries.
- Develop, implement and manage small business and entrepreneurial support programs, including Spark Centennial.
- Build relationships and expand partnerships with Centennial business community including businesses, business resource providers, and industry groups.
- Track and disseminate relevant economic data related to business activity trends in Centennial and utilize that information to inform City strategies.
- Develop metrics to determine program success.
- Responsible for the maintenance, updating and retention of records, data, and content managed within the scope pf the position. Acquires and utilizes knowledge of the City’s electronic content management systems and guards against the unauthorized removal, destruction or use of municipal records. Recognizes and respects that City employees forego any personal or proprietary right to the City’s records including those that may have been developed, created, or compiled during their tenure in employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Economic development concepts and core economic development services including business retention, expansion, attraction, and small business and entrepreneurial support.
- Business resource providers in the Denver South and Metro Denver regions.
- Denver South and Metro Denver’s regional economic development model and Metro Denver Code of Ethics.
Skills:
- Interpersonal, analytical, verbal and written communication.
- Proactive and outgoing.
- Networking, convening, and facilitation of business community.
- Use of standard office equipment, computer equipment and software including word processing, database management, and spreadsheet applications, financial accounting software and electronic mail.
- Maintain a professional, approachable appearance.
- Be punctual.
Ability to:
- Manage complex relationships and projects including project teams, contracts, and stakeholders in a dynamic environment.
- Develop and implement programs, coordinate projects, and communicate changes and progress.
- Manage project team activities and complete projects on time and within budget.
- Deal effectively and diplomatically with businesses, commercial real estate professionals, economic development partners and other stakeholders.
- Occasionally work an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.
- Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with City staff, contractors, vendors, auditors, Elected Officials, and members of the public.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Four year bachelor’s degree
- 2-4 years of experience in economic development, local government, commercial real estate or development, planning or other related fields
- Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) certification or willingness to work toward certification.
