Position Summary

The Assistant Store Manager partners with the Store Manager to lead day-to-day retail, yard, customer-service, merchandising, inventory, safety, and people operations. This position serves as the leader on duty when assigned and helps ensure the store operates safely, efficiently, profitably, and consistently with company standards.

The Assistant Store Manager provides visible floor leadership, coaches employees, resolves customer concerns, coordinates priorities across departments, and helps develop a capable team. Success in this role requires an owner mindset: seeing what needs attention, taking responsible action, and following through.


Qualifications

Leadership scope: Provides day-to-day direction to store employees and serves as leader on duty as assigned.

Schedule: Must be available for a flexible retail schedule, including opening and closing shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The responsibilities below describe how the Assistant Store Manager leads the business and brings our Core Values to life. Other responsibilities may be assigned based on store and business needs.

People Leadership and Team Development

Support the Store Manager in setting clear expectations, communicating priorities, and holding the team accountable for results.

Lead by example in professionalism, attendance, safety, customer service, teamwork, and productive use of time.

Coach employees in the moment, recognize strong performance, and provide respectful, timely feedback when standards are not met.

Assist with onboarding, training, cross-training, and development of new and existing employees.

Help build bench strength by identifying employee potential and creating opportunities for teammates to learn and grow.

Partner with the Store Manager and Human Resources on performance, attendance, employee-relations, and policy matters; maintain appropriate confidentiality.

Help create a workplace where employees understand how their work contributes to the store, the customer, and the community.

Customer Experience and Sales Leadership

Model and reinforce Cascade's Seven Steps of Customer Service and the expectation of creating lifelong Customer Advocates.

Maintain a visible presence throughout the store, engage customers, and step in quickly to resolve concerns with sound judgment.

Support the team in product recommendations, special orders, project solutions, and accurate customer transactions.

Build relationships with homeowners, contractors, and community customers while identifying opportunities to grow sales and loyalty.

Ensure phones, counters, departments, and customer handoffs are managed promptly, professionally, and accurately.

Stay informed about promotions, products, pricing, local competition, and customer needs.

Store Operations and Financial Stewardship

Serve as leader on duty and coordinate opening, closing, staffing, workflow, customer service, and store readiness as assigned.

Support sales, margin, expense, labor, and productivity goals by understanding store results and helping the team connect daily actions to business performance.

Safeguard cash, inventory, equipment, keys, confidential information, and other company resources by following established controls.

Assist with cash handling, deposits, till accountability, returns, credits, overrides, and exception review within assigned authority.

Respond to operational problems with urgency, communicate significant issues, and follow through until they are resolved.

Support accurate timekeeping, schedules, attendance documentation, and payroll-related approvals as assigned.

Help maintain productive staffing coverage and adjust priorities when customer demand or business conditions change.

Merchandising, Inventory, and Store Standards

Maintain a clean, organized, well-stocked, and customer-ready store, yard, warehouse, and exterior environment.

Support merchandising plans, promotional displays, signage, pricing accuracy, product resets, and seasonal transitions.

Assist with receiving, stocking, cycle counts, inventory accuracy, shrink prevention, and resolution of inventory discrepancies.

Coordinate work across sales-floor, yard, receiving, and delivery functions so customer commitments are met.

Identify facility, equipment, inventory, or housekeeping concerns and ensure timely follow-up.

Safety and Risk Management

Promote a culture where safety is a shared responsibility and employees are expected to report hazards and injuries immediately.

Model and enforce safe work practices, required personal protective equipment, equipment procedures, and company safety policies.

Conduct or support safety meetings, inspections, incident response, documentation, and corrective actions as assigned.

Address unsafe behavior promptly and partner with the Store Manager and Human Resources on injury reporting, restrictions, and return-to-work coordination.

Maintain safe customer and employee access throughout the store, yard, warehouse, and loading areas.

Leadership Readiness and Continuous Improvement

Learn the complete store business, including customer segments, financial drivers, staffing, inventory, facilities, safety, and community relationships.

Use an owner mindset to identify opportunities, recommend solutions, and improve how the store serves customers and supports employees.

Participate in leadership development, company meetings, training, and cross-functional initiatives.

Be prepared to assume Store Manager responsibilities during absences and to support other locations when business needs require.

Contribute to a strong leadership pipeline and demonstrate readiness for increased responsibility as opportunities become available.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; additional business, retail, construction, or leadership education is preferred.

Two (2) or more years of retail, building-materials, hardware, construction, contractor-sales, or related customer-service experience preferred.

One (1) or more years of leadership, supervisory, key-holder, or lead experience preferred.

Demonstrated record of dependable attendance, customer service, teamwork, and responsible decision-making.

Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record may be required when travel or operation of company vehicles is assigned.

Travel

Occasional travel to other company locations, the support office, training sessions, or community events may be required. Travel expectations will vary by business need.

Physical Requirements

To perform the essential functions of this role, an employee must be able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours per shift.

Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally move up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.

Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach, push, pull, climb, and work in other positions common to retail, warehouse, and lumber-yard operations.

Safely climb and descend ladders and navigate sales-floor, warehouse, yard, and loading areas.

Read product information, plans, reports, computer screens, and written instructions and communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by telephone.

Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

Working Conditions

This position works in retail sales, office, warehouse, lumber-yard, loading, and outdoor environments. The employee may be exposed to dust, noise, moving vehicles and equipment, uneven surfaces, changing temperatures, and inclement weather. Consistent attention to safety is required.
