Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Sanitation / Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising production operations while ensuring company standards for product quality, food safety, sanitation, employee safety, housekeeping, and production efficiency are maintained.
This position is responsible for administering and enforcing the company quality program in accordance with customer and company requirements, supervising production personnel, coordinating labor, monitoring employee performance, and ensuring production activities are completed efficiently and accurately.
The position requires strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and organizational skills. The supervisor must be able to work independently while maintaining close communication with management, production, quality, sanitation, procurement, sales, and other departments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Production & Shift Supervision
- Supervise the correct utilization and distribution of labor to ensure all production tasks are completed properly and efficiently.
- Determine production needs and assist in distributing labor appropriately.
- Determine the needs of other departments and assist in coordinating labor as necessary.
- Monitor production efficiency and the timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Monitor raw product usage and review production decisions as needed.
- Monitor finished product inventory and communicate production needs to appropriate personnel.
- Determine the proper use of raw production products and assist leads and assistants with production decisions.
- Inform assistants and leaders of new orders, order changes, and production priorities.
- Monitor completion of required paperwork, production records, and task documentation.
- Organize communication so production personnel can remain focused on efficiency and production requirements.
- Assist in other areas whenever needed to maintain production and company operations.
Sanitation & Housekeeping
- Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained throughout production and work areas.
- Assist in cleaning and sanitation activities as needed.
- Ensure employees follow established cleaning and sanitation procedures.
- Monitor sanitation conditions and communicate deficiencies to the appropriate personnel.
- Ensure proper PPE and safety procedures are followed during sanitation and production activities.
- Assist with sanitation-related issues and corrective actions as needed.
Employee Supervision & Development
- Provide effective leadership and supervision to assigned employees.
- Responsible for supervising and managing approximately 4–8 employees while completing hands-on and multifaceted responsibilities.
- Assist management with the hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions of employees.
- Arrange appropriate training for employees.
- Provide employees with feedback and performance reviews.
- Monitor employee performance and address performance issues appropriately.
- Maintain open communication with management and employees.
- Ensure employees understand assigned tasks, expectations, quality requirements, and safety procedures.
- Complete tasks that are started and ensure necessary information is communicated effectively to the appropriate employees before leaving the task or area.
- Work independently, make appropriate decisions, and communicate decisions and concerns to management.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Enforce all company safety procedures and applicable OSHA requirements.
- Ensure employees follow standard operating procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintain and enforce required cGMP and PPE standards.
- Ensure required safety equipment is used properly.
- Address unsafe conditions and communicate safety concerns to management.
- Promote a safe working environment while maintaining production efficiency.
Laboratory & Quality Control Responsibilities
- Monitor laboratory activities and ensure required testing and documentation are completed.
- Ensure laboratory personnel receive appropriate information regarding production, quality, and testing requirements.
- Communicate laboratory and quality information to management and production personnel as needed.
LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS
The supervisor must be able to effectively balance production requirements with quality, food safety, sanitation, and employee safety requirements.
The position requires the ability to:
- Communicate clearly and effectively with employees and management.
- Work through challenges while remaining focused on required daily tasks.
- Make decisions independently when appropriate.
- Coordinate activities between Production, Quality, Sanitation, Procurement, Sales, and other departments.
- Maintain accurate and timely communication.

- Hold employees accountable for following company policies and procedures.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS.
- Computer literate
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to supervise and coordinate multiple employees and departments.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
- Knowledge of quality, food safety, sanitation, and production procedures preferred.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position is required to work a minimum of 45–50 hours per week, depending on production requirements, customer requirements, staffing needs, quality control responsibilities, and effective management of assigned personnel.
Additional hours may be required based on business and production needs.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the ability to work in a production environment and regularly move throughout production, quality, sanitation, and other work areas.
