TITLE: Assistant Trades Manager

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

REPORTS TO: Facilities Trades Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD

LOCATION: On-Site Main Campus

STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Facilities Trades Manager, the Assistant Trades Manager provides day-to-day supervision and coordination of assigned skilled trades personnel while assisting with the maintenance, repair, installation, and operation of University facilities and infrastructure. The position assists in planning and coordinating maintenance activities, monitors work quality and safety, provides technical guidance to assigned employees, and supports the efficient operation of facilities in accordance with University policies, applicable codes, and established safety standards. This position requires a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to effectively perform supervisory, maintenance, and operational responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the Facilities Trades Manager in coordinating, assigning, and monitoring the daily work activities of assigned skilled trades personnel.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision, technical guidance, and work direction to assigned employees while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards.
  • Performs routine maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of campus facilities, building systems, equipment, and infrastructure as needed.
  • Coordinates and assists with larger maintenance, renovation, repair, and deferred maintenance projects.
  • Performs and oversees work involving carpentry, drywall, painting, minor construction, and other general maintenance activities.
  • Conducts facility inspections and identifies maintenance needs, safety concerns, and repair priorities.
  • Prepares reports regarding facility conditions, maintenance activities, work completion, and operational status.
  • Operates University vehicles, forklifts, lifts, power equipment, and other tools required to perform assigned duties.
  • Coordinates shipping, receiving, inventory, materials handling, equipment movement, and related operational activities.
  • Ensures proper housekeeping practices and maintains clean, safe, and organized work areas.
  • Implements and monitors compliance with University safety policies, OSHA requirements, and established work practices.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance situations and assists with snow removal, weather-related response activities, and other campus operational needs.
  • Communicates effectively with faculty, staff, contractors, vendors, and other University departments to coordinate maintenance activities and resolve operational issues.
  • Maintains a regular, reliable, and consistent on-campus presence to effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of building maintenance practices, construction methods, and skilled trades operations.
  • Knowledge of building systems, equipment, tools, materials, and maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, workplace safety practices, and applicable building codes.
  • Ability to supervise, coordinate, and provide technical guidance to skilled trades personnel.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments, coordinate multiple projects, and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, work orders, equipment manuals, and technical documents.
  • Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, University vehicles, forklifts, lifts, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and members of the campus community.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain maintenance records.
  • Ability to work safely in varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Provides day-to-day supervision and work direction for assigned skilled trades personnel.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental and institutional operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance, construction, skilled trades, facilities operations, or a closely related field.
  • Lead worker or supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience operating maintenance equipment and coordinating maintenance projects is preferred.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with University requirements.
  • Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification within the timeframe established by the University is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and requires frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, mechanical equipment, construction activities, and other conditions associated with facilities maintenance.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, reaching, crawling, and working from elevated surfaces are required.
  • Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Occasional overtime, evening, weekend, holiday, or emergency call-back work may be required to support campus operations.
