Job Description
Walnut Hill Landscape Company
Location: Annapolis, Maryland
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports To: Sales Manager / President
Build the numbers behind exceptional landscapes.
Walnut Hill Landscape Company is looking for a detail-driven Estimator / Pre-Construction Specialist to help us price, plan, and prepare high-end landscape projects with accuracy and clarity.
This role is for someone who enjoys turning plans, site conditions, material pricing, labor assumptions, and production details into estimates the whole team can trust. You will work closely with sales, design, production, vendors, and leadership to make sure every project starts with a clear scope, realistic budget, and strong path to profitability.
At Walnut Hill, craftsmanship starts before the first shovel hits the ground. It starts with a great estimate.
What You’ll Own
- Prepare detailed landscape construction estimates, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, overhead, and profit assumptions.
- Review drawings, client notes, site conditions, and scope requirements to catch gaps before proposals go out.
- Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for hardscape, planting, drainage, irrigation, grading, lighting, and related project scopes.
- Verify supplier and subcontractor pricing so estimates reflect current costs and availability.
- Maintain cost libraries, assemblies, templates, and pricing standards.
- Work with sales and design to clarify alternates, exclusions, allowances, and proposal strategy.
- Help production start jobs with clear budgets, scope notes, material assumptions, and handoff information.
- Review estimate-to-actual results and help improve future estimating accuracy.
What Success Looks Like
You are winning in this role when:
- Estimates are accurate, complete, and delivered on time.
- Sales has clear pricing and scope notes before client conversations.
- Production receives budgets that match the work being sold.
- Pricing risks are caught before they become field problems.
- Cost data gets better because lessons from completed jobs are fed back into future estimates.
What We’re Looking For
The right person for this role is analytical, organized, and detail-obsessed, but also practical enough to understand how work actually gets built in the field.
You should bring:
- Experience in landscape, construction, or design/build estimating.
- Strong understanding of labor planning, material pricing, equipment costs, subcontractor scopes, and production sequencing.
- Ability to read plans and turn them into accurate takeoffs.
- Comfort working with estimating software, spreadsheets, supplier pricing, and proposal tools.
- Clear communication with sales, design, production, vendors, and leadership.
- A strong sense of ownership, follow-through, and professional pride.
Experience with LMN or other landscape estimating systems is a plus.
