Our surgery center specializes in a variety of orthopaedic procedures, including but not limited to total joint replacements, ACL reconstruction, joint arthroscopy, foot and ankle procedures, and hand procedures. Shoreline Orthopaedics is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join our team at the Surgery Center at Westpark in Zeeland. This position plays an essential role in preparing and maintaining the sterile field, anticipating the needs of surgeons and patients, and assisting during orthopaedic procedures.

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for surgical instrumentation, equipment preparation, and the technical aspects of the operative procedure. This position also assists with cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, storing, and maintaining surgical instruments and equipment and may rotate into the Sterile Processing area as needed.

Schedule: This is a part-time, benefit-eligible position working approximately 26 hours per week, consisting of two 8-hour shifts and one 10-hour shift.

• 8-hour shifts: 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
• 10-hour shift: 7:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
• No nights, weekends, or holidays.

The anticipated schedule is Tuesday and Thursday for the 8-hour shifts and Friday for the 10-hour shift. Candidates should have flexibility with scheduled days, as the schedule may occasionally change based on department coverage needs, vacations, and other scheduling needs.

• Prepare and maintain the sterile field, including opening surgical supplies and instruments, draping, and preparing and testing equipment.
• Identify, select, and coordinate the instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for scheduled orthopaedic procedures.
• Assist surgeons throughout surgical procedures by anticipating instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and other necessary supplies.
• Assist with gowning and gloving surgeons and maintain proper sterile technique throughout procedures.
• Participate in surgical time-outs and sponge, needle, blade, and sharp counts to promote patient safety.
• Monitor the sterile field and identify potential breaks in sterile technique.
• Assist with surgical dressing application, specimen handling, and communication with the circulating nurse.
• Assist with operating room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures.
• Clean, inspect, lubricate, package, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment, including proper handling of loaner instrument sets.
• Rotate into the Sterile Processing area as needed.
• Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient patient care.
• Participate in mandatory training, staff meetings, and continuing education to stay current with surgical procedures and techniques.

• Skills & Competencies: Comprehensive knowledge of sterile technique, surgical positioning and draping, surgical instrumentation, equipment, basic anatomy, and surgical procedures. Must be organized, flexible, and adaptable, with the ability to remain calm in a busy surgical environment. Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and organizational skills are essential. Knowledge of instrument cleaning, packaging, and sterilization using an autoclave is preferred, or a willingness to learn.
• Education & Experience: A minimum of one year of experience working in an operating room environment is required; two or more years of experience is preferred. Previous orthopaedic surgical experience is preferred. Current BLS certification is required, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
• Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods while maintaining a sterile field and assisting surgeons during procedures. Employees must be able to stand, walk, stoop, and bend throughout much of their shift, lift and move surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, and assist with lifting, moving, or positioning patients. The position also requires the ability to communicate effectively with operating room personnel while wearing appropriate surgical attire and to read and review patient documentation.
