About This Position

Primary function.
Provide primary and emergency care to patients as defined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement and the Missouri Nursing Practice Act. Services include but are not limited to ordering, conducting, and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, prescription of pharmacological agents, treatments, non-pharmacological therapies, and other duties as assigned and delegated through the existing Collaborative Agreement
Duties and responsibilities
1. Performs comprehensive physical exams in an efficient and effective manner.
· Administers and performs assessment in accordance with the applicable patient type which may include: Medical, Surgical, Obstetrical, Newborn, Pediatric, Trauma, or Cardiac.
· Assesses patient using both subjective data (patient’s story or words) plus objective data (physical exam) and uses clinical judgement and knowledge in obtaining a medical diagnosis and develops a plan of care such as meds, therapy, or other interventions to treat the diagnosis.
· Consults with the physician as needed for practices as per guidelines and within the scope of position.
2. Evaluates, diagnoses, and provide appropriate treatment for health problems of patients.
· Completes an appropriate Medical Screening Examination as per EMTALA regulations.
· Provides stabilizing treatment for the patient while determining the appropriate disposition plan: transfer, discharge, or admission.
· Advises and collaborates with the physician and hospitalist prior to admitting a patient to special observation or acute care level of care. Uses resources for guidelines for appropriate placement (ie: MCG) and documents in chart.
· Teaches and counsels patients about health and illness providing medical information as needed.
3. Initiates emergency care in an effective and responsive manner as each situation requires.
· Responds to emergencies to provide emergency resuscitation and management. Notifies physician of situation.
· Administers and performs emergent care in accordance with the applicable patient population type which ay range from newborn to geriatric.
· Follows standards of BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS interventions as needed.
· Follows emergency policies, procedures, and protocols in an effective manner.
4. Collaborates with Medical Staff, management, and other health care team members to coordinate patient care.
· Works effectively with ancillary areas as part of the team approach to patient care.
· Attends Med Staff meetings as often as possible at the request of CMO. (Does not apply to PRN staff).
· Directs staff team members professionally and appropriately.
· Promotes team concept through effective communication regarding patient condition and medical care plan.
· Informs and involves Nurse Practitioner Director regarding patient care issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
· Acts as a resource person for the nursing staff providing education and guidance.
· Completes case reviews with ER Medical Director or collaborating physician to maintain professional growth and development.
· If patient admitted directly through the emergency room, T-sheet is provided as history and physical (H&P).
· Promotes a good working relationship with Ambulance services and other agencies (funeral homes, Police, Fire, and EMS).
5. Participates in departmental operations and organizational functions.
· Assists in development and review of hospital policies and procedures.
· Participates in Performance Improvement projects, chart audits, and committees as assigned.
· Must be on one Organizational committee, (not including med staff). (This does not apply to PRN Staff).
6. Maintains and performs all patient related documentation in a timely, factual, and legible manner
· Utilizes only approved abbreviations in all documentation.
· Follows all policies and procedures related to the documentation requirements.
· Ensures that documentation reflects information needed to complete coding and billing processes of professional services.
7. Promotes and ensures patient safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
· Follows procedures and protocol to ensure safe administration of medications and monitoring for adverse effects.
· Follows procedures for maintaining records for medication dispensing, controlled substance administration, wasting, and accountability records.
· Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
· Implements infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, proper use of hand washing, and gloves.
· Follows proper procedures for disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.
8. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
· Graduate of accredited school of nursing and an accredited Masters Nursing Program (for graduates after 1993 only).
· Current State of Missouri RN License; BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS. If required certificates are not current upon hire, must complete within six months. Additional suggested certifications include NRP, STABLE, TNCC, ENPC, CATN, GENE, and ENLS
· Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a designated Nurse Practitioner, i.e. Family N.P.
· Emergency Room or Intensive Care nursing background required; ER or Urgent Care preferred.
Working conditions
Incumbent will be exposed to virus, disease, infection from patients. Usually wear a uniform and PPE. Maybe required to work long shifts. May work weekends, nights, and holidays. May also be on call.
Physical requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and listen. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching as well as lifting and supporting patients.
