About the Role:

At the WCIRB, the Associate Actuarial Research Analyst is part of an innovative team that applies new methodologies and data to answer traditional actuarial questions. The Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California (WCIRB) is California's trusted, objective provider of actuarially-based information and research, advisory pure premium rates, and educational services integral to a healthy workers' compensation system. The WCIRB is a California unincorporated, private, nonprofit association comprised of all companies licensed to transact workers' compensation insurance in California, and has over 400 member companies. No state money is used to fund its operations. The operations of the WCIRB are funded primarily by membership fees and assessments.

To accurately measure the cost of providing workers' compensation benefits, the WCIRB performs a number of functions, including collection of premium and loss data on every workers' compensation insurance policy, examination of policy documents, inspections of insured businesses, and test audits of insurer payroll audits and claims classification.

We work on a range of workers’ compensation topics including research into the optimal form of our innovative experience rating plan (Experience Rating Plan (wcirb.com)) and deeper dives into drivers of workers’ compensation costs as in our annual Geo Study (WCIRB Geo Study | WCIRB California).

The WCIRB employs approximately 175 people. The home office is located in San Francisco, California.

Note: this position may be filled at the Actuarial Research Analyst level depending on candidate’s experience and number of CAS exams passed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Compiles data sets for research projects using R. Downloads data from data warehouses and compiles data from other sources for analysis in spreadsheets (such as Excel) or statistical or specialized software (such as R).
  • Compiles and maintains databases from internal and external sources and updates regularly published reports and analyses.
  • Proofs and audits data for accuracy, reasonableness, and suitability. Identifies outliers and other anomalous patterns and brings these to the attention of the Vice President, Research.
  • Performs more complex research, statistical and other analyses under guidance of the Vice President, Research.

Education, Experience, and Skill Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, data science, economics or a related field.
  • Completion of at least one Casualty Actuarial Society examination or comparable educational experience.
  • At least one year of experience in an office environment or a prior Actuarial internship preferred.
  • Proficiency in programming with SQL, R or Python.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following three areas: applied statistics, economics and finance (beyond a college sophomore level), or programming (in a language such as R, Python or C++). Proficiency may be demonstrated by passage of appropriate Casualty Actuarial Society examinations, college credit or satisfactory demonstration to the Vice President, Research.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills including the ability to understand understand complex and nuanced instructions in preparing research databases.
  • Ability to clearly communicate findings, issues, and recommendations to co-workers. Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing in a professional manner.
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on projects.
  • Able to work independently with occasional supervision.
