Summary
The Coordinator of Religious Education is responsible for the application of a parish catechetical program(s) for all age groups. This position will work with the Pastor in administrating a parish faith formation program. This position will also perform basic administrative duties related to the Religious Education Program and will maintain files and records of students. Additionally, this position at times requires evening work, and the candidate is expected to be a practicing Catholic layperson or religious brother or sister. The Coordinator of Religious Education will also connect the individuals, parents of youth and families in the program to the larger parish community. Other responsibilities may include preparing and distributing weekly bulletin communication (both paper and electronic) to individuals and parents of youth.
Responsibilities
- Organizes, schedules and coordinates the faith formation for all registered catechumens in the OCIA and OCIC programs.
- Prepares and schedules or assists with sacramental preparation for Holy Eucharist and Confirmation.
- Prepares or offers input on an annual budget and monthly grade level activities and updates in line with the budget.
- Prepares or assists with a yearly calendar for the religious education and assists in compiling yearly parish master calendar.
- Supports and endorses Diocesan and pastoral council and faith formation commission policies.
- Supervises assigned grade levels or groups (including catechists and support staff) in the religious education program.
- Recruits or assists with eliciting catechists and volunteers for assigned levels or groups.
- Steps in as a substitute catechist, when necessary.
- Is on-site during classes to assist and support.
- Supervises or assists with appropriate in-service training and formation of catechists.
- Advises and visits with students, parents/guardians, catechists if problems or concerns arise.
- Assists in developing individualized programs for parishioners with special religious education needs.
- Prepares or assists with liturgical celebrations for students and families.
- Prepares and coordinates with the pastor/pastoral administrator sacramental rites for students.
- Prepares and assists in planning of First Communion, Confirmation, and Easter Vigil Masses.
- Prepares and coordinates for retreats for religious education of all students including OCIA participants.
- Collaborates with pastoral staff to integrate the total religious education plan for the parish.
- Meets monthly with pastoral staff for planning and integration of Religious Education programs with whole parish program.
- Monitor and order supplies, as necessary, and within budget.
- Maintains constant communication with religious education families.
- Collects fees, as necessary; follows up on outstanding balances after consultation with pastor.
- Assists in preparing and evaluating scholarships for classes.
- Assists in recording of sacraments in sacramental registers.
- Coordinates email announcements.
- Maintains and assists with sacramental records, notifications, and certificates on parish grounds per Diocese guidelines. This includes entering data by computer or manually in logs as required.
- Assists with Diocesan Appeal, Capital Campaign, and other major parish fundraisers.
- Coordinates with Safe Environment Coordinator to ensure all catechists and volunteers are in good standing with Archdiocese safe environments programs
- Will attend Quarterly Pastoral Council Ministry Report meetings as well as development committee or any other meetings assigned by pastor.
- Maintains continuous education and training in the faith.
- Adheres to Archdiocese Code of Conduct and safe environment mandates.
- Other duties as assigned by Pastor
Minimum Qualifications
- Active member of a Roman Catholic parish faith community. (Sometimes this requirement may be satisfied by a person who has knowledge of and is willing to function in a manner consistent with the mission of the Catholic Church). Candidate absolutely must be willing to learn more about the Catholic faith, as needed.
- Bachelors degree and/or undergraduate work in Theology, preferred.
- Catechesis or extensive parish experience as a CRE, preferred.
- Bilingual – (English and Spanish)
- Three years of parish and/or administrative office experience, preferred.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point) or similar programs.
- Ability to communicate with various levels of staff and management.
- Ability to work some evenings when necessary.

- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to compose correspondence, minutes and/or reports.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
