BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN

Title: Behavioral Health Technician (BHT)

Department: Clinical

Reports To: Facility Manager/Clinical Director

FLSA Designation: Full-time, Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a Behavioral Health Professional, the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct support to clients and residents. The BHT monitors client activities, observes and collects urine samples, assists with self‑administration of medication, documents shift notes and contributes to general management of the milieu. The BHT ensures a safe and therapeutic environment by supporting clients throughout their treatment journey.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Provide supervision and support to clients in the treatment center.
  • Monitor client behavior, report observations and document activities in accordance with policy.
  • Offer guidance and encouragement about recovery with a basic understanding of treatment modalities.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA compliance requirements.
  • Provide transportation for outings and appointments as needed.
  • Assist in monitoring clients’ self‑administered medications in compliance with medical policies.
  • Monitor clients’ food and sleep hygiene and report concerns to the supervisor.
  • Prepare daily reports to supervisor on clients’ behaviors and attitudes.
  • Conduct random urinalysis drug testing according to policy, documenting results and obtaining client signatures.
  • Maintain records of urine submissions and client data and immediately report any issues to the Program Manager or Clinical Director.
  • Report unusual client behavior or suspicious activity to supervisory staff.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical and professional conduct and adhere to all policies and procedures.
  • Follow established infection control procedures and maintain proper hygiene when handling samples and supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
  • JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Professional appearance, aptitude and attitude.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health services field or high school diploma (or equivalent) with at least two years of experience in a behavioral healthcare setting.
  • Strong ethics and integrity.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (MVD check).
  • Certification in waived testing procedures and related training requirements.
  • Ability to obtain a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Negative tuberculosis test or documented freedom from TB within the past 12 months.
  • Ability to take direction, make sound decisions and maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of the 12‑step recovery model and related literature and principles.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health best practices and infection control.
  • Ability to set priorities and maintain accurate records aligned with treatment plan goals and policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with clients and co‑workers.
  • Competency in completing urinalysis documentation and obtaining samples.
  • Commitment to abstinence‑based recovery and ability to differentiate between substance abuse and mental health approaches.
  • Participation in clinical oversight and training as required (minimum 1 hour per 80 hours worked).
  • Ability to provide clear documentation and reports to clinical staff when necessary.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    1. Must be able to walk, bend, stand, climb stairs, speak English, hear, use a telephone, drive an automobile and operate standard office equipment such as a computer, copier and fax machine.

    2. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
