About This Position

As an FCU Financial Counselor at Moffitt Cancer Center, you are responsible for working with patients and their families, serving as the primary contact for their financial inquiries. The FCU Financial Counselor helps patients who are uninsured, under-insured or have policies with limited benefits or noncovered services by providing financial options. The FCU Financial Counselor is responsible for collecting patient's estimated balances pre-service. The FCU Financial Counselor is also responsible for completing screening and determining patient eligibility for the community screening access program.


Successful FCU Financial Counselors have strong communication skills, are comfortable with medical terminology, registration, insurance verification, insurance benefits and financial assistance processes. FCU Financial Counselors are organized and thrive in a highly structured environment. Supporting the unique needs of cancer patients, FCU Financial Counselors must remain calm under pressure and be able to diffuse tension when problems arise. FCU Financial Counselors must demonstrate sensitivity to the difficulties and financial challenges that patients face as they seek cancer care.


Successful FCU Financial Counselors understand Moffitt's financial policies and use critical thinking skills to provide the best resolution based on the patient's needs. Incumbents successfully adhere to financial policies and processes, act with integrity, good judgment, take initiative and pro-actively solve problems. Incumbents work independently but are flexible and collaborate to ensure the department’s goals are met.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Knowledge of patient registration, insurance benefits, financial assistance, collections.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-pace environment while demonstrating a positive attitude and empathy
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with patients while demonstrating a positive and professional approach
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and intermediate to advanced computer skills; fast learning ability to use new technologies and systems
  • Ability to effectively develop and nurture relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders

Responsibilities:

  • Screening and Identifying financial options for New Patients
  • Collecting estimated balances for new and established patients
  • Ensures organizational compliance with No Surprises Act and reduces Self Pay population
  • Performs pre-registration of uninsured new patients at the Cancer Center
  • Performs Full Verification, Insurance benefits, refers to Copay Assistance program
  • Ongoing Training
  • Other job-specific duties as assigned
  • Permanent communication with stakeholders

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in Revenue Cycle functions as: collector, registration, financial
    counselor or insurance verification/authorization with a healthcare provider or insurance company
    required.
    -OR-
  • *In lieu of Associate's degree, a High School Diploma/GED plus two (2) years of additional experience in
    Revenue Cycle functions as: collector, registration, financial counselor or insurance
    verification/authorization with a healthcare provider or insurance company will be considered (for a total
    of five (5) years' experience)
  • Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRRC) through the Healthcare Finance Management
    Association (HFMA) *Must obtain within 6 months from date of hire/transfer. (Certification will be tracked
    by the Financial Clearance Unit Department)

Minimum Skills/Specialized Training Required:
-Excellent time management, organizational, and intermediate to advanced computer skills; fast learning
ability to use new technologies and systems
-Ability to effectively develop and nurture relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders
