Job Description

Description:

Director of Finance

Location: Mora, Minnesota Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt Reports To: Executive Director Department: Fiscal

About the Opportunity

Our client is a community action nonprofit serving families and individuals in east-central Minnesota, and they're looking for a Director of Finance to lead the agency's financial health and integrity. This is a high-impact leadership role for a finance professional who wants their work to translate directly into stronger programs and better outcomes for the community.

You'll oversee day-to-day financial operations, ensure compliance with federal and state funding requirements, manage grant financial reporting, lead audit preparation, and supervise our accounting team — all while partnering closely with the Executive Director on the fiscal strategy that keeps our mission moving forward.

Our client is committed to investing in the right person. If you don't check every box below but have a strong foundation in finance or accounting and the drive to grow into this role, we want to hear from you. Our client is willing to provide training and mentorship to help the right candidate build toward full readiness for this position.

What You'll Do

Financial Operations

  • Oversee accounting operations, including AP/AR, general ledger, payroll, bank reconciliations, and monthly close
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports
  • Maintain strong internal controls and lead annual financial audit preparation, including Single Audit (Uniform Guidance) compliance
  • Oversee insurance coverage, retirement plan audits, and workers' comp reporting

Grants & Compliance

  • Manage financial reporting for federal, state, and private grants across 80+ programs
  • Ensure proper cost allocation across multiple funding streams and monitor restricted funding compliance
  • Prepare and submit required state and federal tax reports, payroll reports, and funder cash requests
  • Ensure adherence to Uniform Guidance, OMB cost principles, and other applicable regulatory standards

Leadership

  • Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance management
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and safeguards
  • Keep the Executive Director informed on financial performance, risks, and opportunities
  • Provide budgeting and forecasting guidance to program staff across the organization

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field — or equivalent knowledge gained through relevant experience, independent study, or other applicable training (education may be waived for candidates with significant job-related experience)
  • 3+ years of relevant financial management experience; nonprofit or public sector experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with federal grants management, audit processes, and regulatory compliance
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial/accounting software
  • Strong organizational, communication, and supervisory skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (some local travel required)
  • Must pass a background study

Don't meet every qualification listed above? We encourage you to apply anyway. We value potential, drive, and a willingness to learn — and we're prepared to support your growth into this role through training and mentorship.

Work Environment

Hybrid role based in Mora, MN — a flexible blend of in-office and remote work. Standard office physical requirements apply (occasional lifting up to 25 lbs, sitting/standing/bending as needed).

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to bring your financial expertise to work that matters — helping ensure the resources entrusted to the organization are managed with integrity so we can keep serving the community well. You'll have real influence over financial strategy, a seat at the leadership table, and the chance to mentor a growing accounting team.
