Position Description:
This position supports the work of the Museum’s Collections Department by providing access to the cultural resources and publications of The Franklin Institute. The Special Collections Associate is responsible for the day-to-day processing, organization, and description of library and archival materials, as well as supporting access to collections and publications. The Special Collections Associate reports to the Director of Collections and is a part-time position effectively operating the Institute’s Library and Archives and assisting with The Journal of The Franklin Institute and Franklin Open.
Core Responsibilities:
Library, Archives & Special Collections:- Process publications through cataloging system according to standards in the field
- Perform cataloging and metadata entry
- Support ongoing digitization efforts, including preparation, file organization, and metadata creation
- Survey, organize, rehouse, digitize, describe, and catalog 2- and 3-D artifacts (e.g. documents, correspondence, prints, ephemera, photographs, film, objects, etc.)
- Fulfill Library access needs including digital access to publications and collections
- Maintain organization and accessibility of physical and digital collections
- Respond to author, reviewer, and editor inquiries
- Assign manuscripts
- Run reports

Position Requirements:
- Degree in Library and Information Science or related field
- Minimum of three years of experience in a library and/or archive
- Experience using an Integrated Library System (ILS) for cataloging and collections access
- Working knowledge of current cataloging and digitization standards
- Experience with Koha or similar systems preferred
- Demonstrated experience with migrations and copyright language a plus
- Ability to work independently while following established priorities
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Above average research, writing, and documentation skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and library-related software tools
- Ability to lift heavy boxes (40 lb) and bend, reach, and handle materials for extended periods
- Work with documents in places that may be dusty, temperature-variable, and difficult to access (incl. small elevator and flights of stairs)
Status: Part-time, 30 hours per week, Monday – Thursday, 8:45 am – 5:15 pm
Salary: $30.00/hour
