Director of Operations — Train America
Train America is a skilled trades training company, founded by industry veterans, building a network of training centers that provide one-week bootcamps in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, facilities maintenance, and industrial maintenance, hosted inside large distribution partners. Initial training centers are being launched in Texas, in partnership with Ferguson, a $30B and 1,700+ location distributor of the tools, equipment, and supplies used by the skilled trades workforce.
The Director of Operations is responsible for how training actually happens. As part of the founding team at Train America, you would report to the CEO. You will build the five bootcamp learning paths with subject matter experts, stand up our first training center in Austin, select and open a second center in Houston, recruit and develop the Guides who teach, and put in place the business processes and systems the operation runs on. This is a build-it role, not a maintain-it role.
Key Results
- All five bootcamp learning paths are fully completed and ready to teach.
- Austin Training Center implemented and ready for launch — equipped for all five bootcamp categories, with Guides and a Site Administrator placed.
- Houston Training Center location selected and contracted, implemented, and ready for launch.
- Key business processes designed and implemented, including technology selection and rollout.
Responsibilities
- Own Training Operations end to end — how training occurs, the training calendar, and the student experience.
- Build and complete the five bootcamp learning paths in partnership with trade subject matter experts.
- Recruit, credential, onboard, and develop the 1099 Guides who deliver training, and hold them to a student NPS standard.
- Hire and lead the Site Administrator, and grow the in-region team including Guides, Training Administration, and Site Administration.
- Select, equip, and open training centers — facility, equipment, tools, and assets, from specification and procurement through installation, maintenance, and asset records.
- Own the training experience for students and employer customers, measured by Net Promoter Score and Net Contribution Income.
- Serve as the operational accountability point for all five training disciplines, working through subject matter experts.
- Support the design and implementation of key business processes, including technology selection, and manage day-to-day IT administration.
Requirements
- 5+ years leading day-to-day training operations across more than one physical location, owning schedule, staffing, facilities, equipment, and customer experience.
- 5+ years running instructor-led or blended training programs, including building learning paths with subject matter experts and measuring learner outcomes.
- Startup experience standing up something that did not previously exist — a site, a program, or the operating system a new business runs on — without established process or staff support.
- Familiar with various industries that employ skilled trades people such as construction, commercial property maintenance and industrial jobsites.
- Demonstrated experience recruiting, onboarding, scheduling, and holding a quality bar with both full-time personnel and 1099 instructors or contract labor.
- Strong organization and planning ability; comfortable owning a calendar with many competing constraints.
- Excellent communication, oral and written, and credibility with tradespeople, employers, and students alike.
- Based in Austin, or Houston, Texas (up to 20% travel).
