Job Description
Job Summary
The Work Skills Instructor is responsible for teaching, coaching, and supporting individuals as they develop the practical, vocational, and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in the workplace. This role blends instruction, hands-on training, and individualized support to help learners build confidence and meet IEP employment goals, as well as evaluating transition into competitive or supported employment settings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging instruction on workplace readiness topics such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and professional behavior.
- Teach work skills aligned with program goals (e.g., customer service, problem solving, safety procedures, and completing assigned tasks to set standards).
- Assess learners’ abilities and create individualized accommodations based on strengths, needs, and employment goals.
- Provide hands-on coaching in classroom and work environments.
- Model and reinforce professional expectations, including punctuality, dress, workplace etiquette, and task completion.
- Track learners’ progress, maintain accurate documentation, and prepare reports for IEP teams, case managers, and/or partner agencies.
- Collaborate with employers, vocational rehabilitation counselors, job coaches, and other stakeholders.
- Adapt instruction for diverse learning styles, including individuals with disabilities, language barriers, or limited work experience.
- Support job search activities, such as résumé development, interview practice, and application assistance.
- Ensure a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes growth and independence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Experience in workforce development, education, vocational training, human services, or related fields.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities or barriers to employment.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional strategies.
- Familiarity with vocational rehabilitation programs, supported employment, or community based training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must possess well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all levels of staff inside and outside the organization.
- Skilled in organization, time management, communication, and positive interpersonal skills.
- Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.
- Ability to understand the individual needs of each student.
- Must have sufficient knowledge of computer systems (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Extensive knowledge of accepted standards of practice and ability to provide instruction and direction.
- Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and special education students.
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements
Good hearing and visual skills; ability to bend, stoop, sit, stand, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
